Check the fuel pump relay it's behind the glove box. They are known for weak solder joints and the ignition coil won't get current if the relay is bad. Also check the VSS (vehical speed sensor) it hard to get at you'll should buy a repair manual. Check out this forum

We had to replace the powersteering pump and serpentine belt on 01 volvo s80. The timing belt is a lil warn but funtional and timing is set. The car will still not start. What else should we check.

Changing a belt and pump should not cause a no start situation unless there was something unplugged/disconnected during install that wasn't hooked back up. You need to determine whether there is spark and fuel present. Remove a spark plug wire/coil and crank engine. You should see/hear a spark from the coil/plugwire if spark ok. You then must check for fuel pressure from the test port on the fuel rail ( if equipped ) to determine fuel supply. Diagnostics will then have to be conducted on what is missing

My 2003 volvo s40 won't start but turns over. What could be the problem. I know I needed a thermostat but the engine is not over heating. I changed the fuel pump fuse.

check see if your getting spark first use a screw driver inside one of the plug wires if it sparks your getting spark if its not you probly have a bad coil or distributor or plug could also be a timing chain issue with them they are known for that also

Reasons for engine turning over and not firing are simple. Spark or fuel. If you've changed the coil packs then chances are it's a fuel issue. Get in cab and turn ignition to second position whilst listening to back seat. You should hear the faint noise of the fuel pump working. If you can't, I suggest you firstly check your manual to find the fuse/relay for the fuel pump and check that. If they are fine, you need to replace fuel pump.

If you can hear it working and it still won't start, remove the fuel line going to injector rail and point into a jar whilst someone turns engine over. You should have fuel coming out. If this is fine, go back to ignition, remove a spark plug and turn engine over checking for a spark.

My bet is your fuel pump has packed-up. Good luck diagnosing.

If the engine will not fire on starting fluid the problem lies elsewhere in ignition. Spark plugs etc. computer has a nofault safety start relay. meaning no spark , no fuel

My wife was driving her '83 Volvo 240 DL, came off of an exit ramp and yielded to make a right turn. When she did the car just died. I checked the spark pluggs and the battery. I don't know if it is the...

Take off the fuse cover and note the location of the in-tank fuel pump & the main pump. If memory serves they are fuses 5 & 7. connect the fuses with a jumper to bypass the pump relay. The fuel pump will come on with the key off! Listen for the sound. No Sound No Pump.
If the pump works, try starting the engine with the jumper attached. If it starts you have a bad relay behind the glove box.

1983 Bronco... turns over no problem.. but wont start up

Check for fuel and spark. If you have fuel but no spark chances are that you may of gas fouled the plugs.Pull one plug out and make sure it's not wet with gas.(If they are replace plugs or if you have a small propane torch you can torch the carbon off the tip).Attach plug(thats out of the engine) to plug wire, lay on fender and turn over engine.Watch to see if there is a spark at the tip.For fuel check look down carb w/vehicle off and pump the throttle by hand to see if gas is squirting into the carb

Sometimes won't start after warmed-up. Now very hard to start.

Hey Rob!
I can almost guarantee you that your problem is the infamous fuel pump relay. Open the hood and remove the fuse box cover (4 torx screws) to gain access to the relays. One of the relays is probably a green one marked 103. If so it needs to be replaced with a red, improved version. If it's not the relay the problem is probably the pump itself. Here's a link to some useful info on the relay and fuel pump:

You should also check for spark when the problem is present. No spark could indicate faulty coil, camshaft position sensor or crankshaft position sensor. Checking a plug for spark is easy: Unscrew the plug and hold it to ground with a pair of insulated pliers or something similar while the problem is present. Have someone crank the engine while you look for spark. Should the engine start while lacking one plug it will sound horrible, but will not be harmed as long as you don't run it too long and don't rev it.

Good luck!
