VSC/check engine light came on last week during an ice storm. Worked fine for days. Went out to start two days ago, only makes a ticking sound - all other power works

Hello/ The P-0158 code realtes to the Oxygen Sensor.

Specifically, it is as follows: Oxygen Sensor Circuit has High Voltage; Bank 2 Sensor 2.

If it under warranty, take it to a dealer to get it replaced free of charge. If not, go tho a dealer and tell them that you want Oxygen Senso Bank 2, Sensor 2, and have them tel you where it is. Please do not buy an "aftermarket" sensor, they have been known to read incorrectly, and you problem will not be solved.

I hope that this helps you, and that you will award me a "FixYa" rating for my assistance. 4 blue diamonds. Thanks.

My 2005 Ford Freestyle keeps dying while I'm driving it. We replaced the battery and checked the connection and the alternator and starter are good.

You have a car that is fully electronically controlled and is able to self diagnose this type of fault, what needs to be done is to have the engine control computer scanned for fault codes, once you have the fault code(s) you can start the diagnostics to repair the problem. This test is referred to as a OBD2 fault code test, any chain auto parts store like Autozone can do the fault code(s) test free.

Ask for a OBD2 fault code test

Why does a wrench sign appear on the dashboard

I hate to be the one to break the news

Those dash lights first came on ALL vehicles
in 1981 & then 1983 that is some 32 model years

On a Ford if you read your owners manual the
Wrench is a MIL Lamp (OBD2 Malfunction Indicator
Lamp) OBD1 (1981 thru 1995) OBD2 (1996 thru 2013)

You check for codes
Use the codes to direct you to a system
Then component test

Only replace parts if they fail a test

Codes do not tell you what is wrong
or to replace anything

Google any codes you get

You have a vehicle system failure

You check for codes the same or next day you
get ANY Dash lights

Make repair within a week or in some cases
stop using until you can arrange a repair

CAR KEEPS CUTING OUT ON ME

Have you had the electronic engine control system scanned/tested for fault codes? it will need to be scanned to obtain the fault codes, this is key to finding out what the problem may be that is causing the stall. The fault code test can be done free of charge by any Autozone auto parts store, Aamco transmission or Kragen/Oriley auto parts store. Ask for a "OBD2" (on board diagnostics generation 2) fault code test.

You will also need what is called an active test run of the OBD2 system, this picks up problems with the automatic idle speed system control. You will need the dealer or a good shop to run that test, it is called a KOER (key on engine runing) test, the free test is a KOEO (key on engine off) test.

Can you tell me if there ie an po035 trouble code for my 1996 oldsmobile aurora. a friend of pluged in his obd2 scaner and gave me this code. but when i went online to look up the code its not on any site

Hi, this code (P0035) applies to turbocharged engines. The stock engine for your car is a 4 liter DOHC. There is no turbo, correct? Recommend you have the car scanned at your local parts chain, then send us the code for repair advice.

Hi, there are a large number of malfunctions that present no noticable symptoms. I recommend you have the car's OBD2 port scanned. Write down the trouble codes and send them to us for repair advice. If you live in the US, you can get a free scan at most parts chains.

Please see my tip at http://www.fixya.com/cars/r5932051-check_engine_light_check. These are generic instructions. If you get stuck or need specific instructions for your car, please get back to me with model, year and engine info.

06 vw beetle won't start...possibly fuel pump is locking. anyone know how to unlock the pump? or have any other ideas why it doesn't start? thanks

OBD2 codes could stop starting. Buy a OBD2 reader from an auto parts store, ($70). Read the codes and write them down. Clear the codes. See if will start. If you need to find the OBD2 port look in the repair manual CD. ($16 Ebay). On a 2003 TDI it is under the steering wheel, just to the left a bit. If you have codes, you can look them up on the repair manual CD.
