Question about 1988 Toyota Pickup

Toyota pickup 1988 V6 Auto tranny does not shift into low 1

The tranny shifts fine when cold, but after about 15 miles the tranny stops down shifing into low 1. I can make it shift into low 1 using the floor shifter but it will not shift automatically, after it has sat for about an hour to cool down it will shift fine again.

The fluid & filter was changed about 200 miles ago. I allso pulled the electric shift solenoids out cleaned/tested & they are working. The exterior linkages are working properly, except for the kickdown cable, i checked the cable when i changed the filter & it is operating very smoothly so the part inside the tranny is what is hanging up intermittently if i push the gas all the way to the floor. I have tryed driving with the kickdown cable disconnected & i still have the same trouble with it not automaticaly downshifting into low 1, So i do not believe that the kickdown linkage is the problem. It would seem to me that one of two things are happening, Either an internal part (valve ?) is expanding from the heat & seizing up, Or a part is worn enough that the fluid just slips past it with out causing it to operate/move properly when the fluid heats up/thins out. This may or may not be related to the downshift problem & does not bother me if it is not related but it is very (to) easy to get it to shift into overdrive, it does not matter what my speed is as long as it is in drive i can let off the gas a little & it will slip right into overdrive. Other cars i have had with overdrive needed to get up over 50mph before shifting into overdrive. But i'm not a tranny guy, thats why i'm here. What do you think?

I guess the best , easiest & cheapest thing to do, right of the start is get fluid & filter changed, and lube all cables & linkages thoroughly, unless that's all been done recently.

Check the sensors on the transmission. May just be corrosion on the sensors or it may be a faulty sensor. Also, the torque converter bearing may have went bad due to the running it on low transmission fluid.

Smoking auto tranny

I had a similar problem with my ford 1/2 ton pulling a trailer on a grade against the wind on hot day. thought I completely fried the tranny. Let it cool off, continued the trip and drove the truck for years with no more problems. Can't explain how your dip stick was dry however. The dipstick should have been wet with foamed trans oil.
