2001 Mercury Grand Marquis brake and ABS dash lights on and off

Hi,
This car has 230K miles on it. At first only the traction control light came on cornering at expressway speeds. Now the amber ABS and red brake lights come on and go out; about half the time I'm driving. This often starts when I drive over a parking lot bump, etc. Just before the ABS and brake lights go off the traction control light comes on briefly. Do you guys think the ABS computer is bad or the ABS wheel sensors/wiring or what. Your opinion is appreciated!

2-20-9 - I have the same. An Oil Change Station said they could fix it for $400 or $500. A Repair place just added Brake Fluid and the problem went away for about a month, they added more and a month later it has come on again. Can I just add fluid until I can afford to replace & fix problem?

My ABS and Trac Control are coming on but NOT the red brake indicator. This just started; intermittent. I'll check fluid level. THX

2004 Ford Freestar Limited. Was driving at slow speeds around town when the rear passenger wheel brake locked on. Abs light popped on and traction control off light popped on. Happened once before but immediately reset somehow and no problem. Not this time. How can i get brake to release?

The red brake light is the key here. That usually indicateds a hydraulic problem. Check you fluid level in master cylinder and see if it is low. Also the level indicator sensor there in the master cylinder maybe sticking or corrioded. If ABS sees the red brake light it will shut off and turn on the ABS light, also traction control would be disabled as well.

Have a scanner put on the system and read the code that should tell you what needs to be repaired. It can also reset the ecm for you as well and turn off the light.

Abs and brake lights on

Could be a bad sensor in one wheel or could be a bad wire connection which I had. My mechanic told me to just drive it with the light on as you still have good brakes when the ABS is not working. All the Abs does is help you stop a little quicker in ice and snow. Abs makes the brakes alternate when wheels are sliding. It will not lesson the braking power. Older cars do this and it cost a lot of money to find out whether its wire or sensor related. Could be a sign the brakes are wearing down as well.

I suggest scanned computer looking fault codes stored there; with this code number we could send you other details. Generally this is a problem with the wheel speed sensor.

Hope this helps.

Where is ABS light located. How do I know if my 1996 has ABS brakes

Possible but not likely in the 96 model. The owners manual would tell you. The ABS warning light is on the dash board cluster and is normally an ABS inside a circle. ABS didn't become real popular until the 2000 year model when FORD and Mercury made that essentially a standard for all models.
