Question about 1998 Chevrolet Malibu
I have a 98 Malibu and when I start it, after about 10-20 seconds, something kicks in under the hood and all the lights in the dash get brighter. I am not sure that this is a problem, but also sometimes when I pull up to a stop sign my car sputters like it's about to die and when the thing under the hood kicks in when I had my Fosgate 1200 watt amp in the trunk, it would cause the amp to stop working and start smoking. My check engine has also been on for a wile too. The power surge happens regardless if the amp is plugged in or not, if I have been driving all day or not in a month, or if it is hot or cold outside. Any suggestions or ideas?
It sounds like you have a Bad Belt Tensioner. If the Belt Tensioner is not Holding the Belt Tight Enough, it will not allow the Alternator to Charge the Battery Completely and will cause the Problems Listed Above. You will need to Locate the Belt Tensioner. It has a Large Pulley on a Bracket that Has a Bolt in the Middle and a Smaller Pulley that Goes Under the Belt and Holds Tension on it. You will need to get a Wratchet, Socket, and Cheater Bar. Turn the Bolt On the Top Large Pulley with the Wratchet and Cheater Bar. This will Lower the Smaller Pulley So that you will be Able to Remove the Belt. Then Remove the Tensioner and the Bracket if Required and Replace. Please Rate My Response! Thanks!
