I have a loud knocking sound coming from my engine. My truck still runs but the sound is getting louder. What could this be and how much would it cost to fix?

If its a top end knock its a rod ...if the knock sounds like its coming from the bottom it might be your oil pump

SOURCE: knockin noise in engine

Could be a lifter getting sticky. What engine, amount of mileage, and how often does it get serviced, and type of oil used, can all play a part in that.

SOURCE: 01 dodge dakota magnum v8 seems to have knocking

If it's cold you could have what they call pistion slap and most of the time the noise goes away when things are at there opperating temprature. If your only get it when your accelerating and the motor is hot, it's eather your timing chain is stretch and time for a new one and worst it could be your rod pin's are worn. Try adding some lucas oil and see if that help's. If it does then it's just a worn engine and just need not to push it too hard. good luck

What would a knocking machine gun sound be under hood. I just started it and somewhere under the hood is a LOUD Knocking like a Machine Gun sound.

Is it metalling sound ? if that's the case then don't drive it .. you might be having issues with connecting rod or the bearings in the both cases engine will seize. Consult a auto technician, but you wont have engine light on due to this.

If it is knocking due to misfire (which is mostly the case as the engine light is also on) .... than find which cylinder have the issue then clean or replace the spark plug. If you can get a scanner to read the car computer it will solve the issue in a blink. Otherwise start the engine ... open the hood .pull out spark plug connector one by one and notice the change in sound... the one that is bad will have no effect on the sound.

Not getting oil to the pistons. Making knocking noise. Wont stay on.

Hello
Has the engine been run low on oil? Does the knocking get louder as the engine warms up? Have you had a automotive technician listen to this noise? Pistons don't really knock, the bearings in the engine called the crankshaft and piston connecting rod bearings do make a loud knocking noise, if that is the case the engine must be removed from the car and rebuilt.

Loud knocking noise from the engine the hotter the engine gets the louder

loud knocking is usually a piston problem[wrist pin-piston-piston rings -rod bent damaged-crank -bearing ]piston hitting valve pull plugs and check for fouling it will narrow down area do compression test but knock usually doesnt last long before engine usually goes south other which u can hope for and can sound like a knock would be the exhaust gasket good luck

Car has loud knocking sound. gets louder with rev of engine.

Here's what you don't want to hear...A loud knocking noise from inside your engine is generally caused by a crank or rod bearing...when caught very early, sometimes they can be replaced. however, once the noise is loud, the attending crankshaft journal gets "hammered" out of shape and the job becomes very expensive and in most cases more costly than engine replacement. There is one other item that can cause a loud knock...your flywheel. Bearing problems generally cause low oil pressure. If you have that, it's gone...if not, have the flywheel checked before sending the engine to the scrapyard.
