2003 F150 SCREW HARD TO START

This is whats going on, It was taking longer to start so I changed the fuel filter. has 39,000 miles on it. No go!. Next a neighbor said oh its a ford starter it dragging,, changed starter.no go!. Noticed when I turn the key on for about 5 second then start (like a deisel) it fires right up. Next thing I was going to check is the psi on the fuel system. Any other ideas?

Thanks

Around 12.6V, started it about 14.3V. -.18 MA not started, started goes to .36 MA and works it's way down to .06 with in about 5 seconds. For some reason it's firing right up now. Not sure what the deal is.

    Thanks

Hi, Long distance troubleshooting so hang in there. When was the last time you checked or changed your battery? Sounds like the time delay allows for less initial draw as electronics turn on. If you have an ammeter you can check this. Watch for initial spike and then see if there is recovery. If this ain't it let us know!

Hi again, I wanted to follow up on the request I made for the current draw. Glad its working for you. In one of my problems last week an F150 would do what you describe only in extreme cold and had about the same results. A dealer told her there was a known problem with one of the wires going to the starter, but I got no other details. The only thing I would guess at would be a dissimilar metal connection or fusible link that my be affected by the cold. You may have inadvertently touched on that connection when inserting your ammeter in the circuit. Again, Ya gotta love long distance troubleshooting! I think you were very through in your approach, hope it continues to work for you! Please rate my response. Thanks!

I have a 03 f150. It turns over but wont start. Where do i start

With the crank no start, 4 things straight away to check.

1. The Fuel inertia Switch. This is in the passenger side kick panel, it is a button that you push down to reset. The kick panel is marked where it is, you might want to use a mirror to see it.

2. The fuel pump relay & Fuse. If you turn the key from off to run ( do not start ) with the door open, do you hear the fuel pump cycle ? If not, either the fuse or the relay is bad. My 2001 at ~ 36K miles had the fuel pump relay go bad, swapped with the trailer tow reverse relay, and it started right up. These are right next to each other in the fuse panel in the engine compartment - check you owners manual for the locations.
If you did not get an owners manual with your truck ( purchased used ), you can download one from Ford :
https://www.fleet.ford.com/maintenance/owners_manuals/default.asp

3. Fuel pump - Use a rubber mallet to thump the bottom of the fuel tank. If the fuel pump is on the way out, this could shake it loose, and start working again. Also could be a plugged fuel filter, when was the last time you changed it ?

4. Is the theft light flashing ? If you turn the key from off to run ( do not start ) does the theft light go out after ~ 5 seconds ?

Obviously there are other things that can cause this symptom, but in my little section of the world, these are usually the issue .

You need to check fuel pressure. Fuel pump may be working but weak.

Sounds like fuel pump is on its way out. Lower fuel level, or even a good hot day in the sun, may also affect how far you get. With more fuel in tank, it takes longer for it to heat up and start acting up. You'll probably have proper ( or close to it ) fuel pressure in the morning because vehicle, gas & pump are cool, then as you use it, it heats up, and doesn't pump up to pressure, which would be a good time to have fuel pressure tested to be 100% sure. You may get a few more miles out of it by changing filter, but no guarantee's.

2003 S-10 4.3 crew cab, is hard to start only in

although your fuel pump is running it might not have the correct pressure so what you need to do is run a fuel pressure test by connecting a pressure gage at the valve on top of the engine take the black screw cap and connect the fuel gage turn the key w/out starting the vehicle and read the pressure it hould drop only about 1 psi but no more than that if it drops more than that you need to buy a fuel pump.

1992 ford f150 duel tank problem, hard to start

The tanks have to be removed in order to change the fuel float sensors.

The hard to start issue could be related to a fuel filter that is full of sediment. The fuel filter could be in the engine compartment before the intake to the engine, but it is more likely an inline filter after the fuel pump on the frame rail. Change the filter and see if that help.
