You have a cylinder misfire. That is the only thing that will flash the check engine light. With the van running spray the plug wires with water. Watch and listen for arcing. If there is, replace that or all the wires. It is possible for new wires to be bad. Next check the cap and rotor buy spraying them with water, than removing and looking inside for signs of burning or anything that will hinder the spark. Last check the spark plugs for carbon tracking (small black lines in the porcelin), caused buy hair line cracks. If you dont find any thing, check it again. With no other codes it is very unlikley that anything else is causing the misfire.

I have a 1987 ford ranger the engine turns over but it wont start

Nissan instructions

You need to take off the ignition wire to allow air to dry the ends of the wire. If that doesn't try replacing the wire. If that doesn't work, you may have to replace the spark plug because it may have cracked during restart. The only other thing left to do is replace the rotor button and distributer cap. If water gets into the cap, it will crack and won't let the car start.

Spark plug wire was pulled while running and the ark traveled back two and a half inched to the rotor cap then the car died. What now?

Yeah like the guy above said check your dizzys coil. I had the EXACT problem. Also pick up a circuit tester and hook it to the dizzys ignition and have a friend turn the engine over. If the light blinks then it's the coil for sure

I have spark at the cap but not to the sparks, already change rotr

Ok, heres how the spark works, coil, to cap,, along the rotor to the connection pins of the cap, to the spark plug wires,, and onto the plugs, inside the cap, make sure that the little center piece is hitting the center or the rotor, which goes out to the tip of the rotor,, that sends spark to the pins inside the cap,, now if your cap has any corrosion or tiny cracks,, that spark will go all over the place and not travel down its intended path, so clean off those contact pins in the cap, or replace it, if you have no spark to any of the plugs,, change the cap,, if its just to one or 2 , check the plug wires and the plugs themselves

1993 chevy suburban, engine has been popping and skipping now has stopped running at all, could it be the distributor cap and rotor button have gone bad ?

its possible it needs tune up but also check the timing. alot of chevy's spit and pop and when you shut them off and go to start later they wont, this is when the timing cam gear goes bad and out of time. turn crank to top dead center (TDC) on timing mark on front of engine cover or tab first, then remove dist cap and notice where the supply point of the rotor is facing. is it pointing to the # cylinder (very front of motor on the driver side)? Or is it aiming to the plug wire location on the dist cap that goes to the # 1 spark plug. ( the front plug on the driver side of motor )? If neither of these are in line then timing is out of wak. If it's all good then check plugs for old worn or burnt electrodes then check rotor with multi testor for current travel, then check cap for electrode failure and then check plug wires for current loss and burn. then perform a compression check on motor. (dry & wet)

2005 explorer 4.0 eng Service eng. soon light came on took it to autozone. The computer said #5 cylinder missfiring. Put new plugs & wires didn't make a difference. Checked compression this morning...

Changeout the rotor button and cap. the cap has carbon pins under there and wear down from the rotor button. The rotor button sits on the distributor which is easily pulled off. When removing these be sure the plug wires stay in order, Also, use di-electic grease on the plug wires, prevents moisture getting there and run away sparks. CAP/ROTOR button $20 approx.

Hi I am in afghanistan and i got a Kia with a toyota engine, they got me a new distributer cap but the numers are difrent from the first one it had on, i hade to change it the old one was broken, i put the...

First thing is to ck for a spark, see if she has good spark. Next remove the cap and watch the rotor button as it turns, have someone crank the engine to see, looking for which direction. Next turn the engine by hand looking for any marks on the crankshaft pully. aligning any marks should be #1 or #4 piston firing position. you will have to do this trial and error. Next if your rotor buton turns to the left align the marks on your pully and put your # 1 plug wire at the port in the cap which the rotor button is pointing at, then next put the #3 plug wire in,next #4 and last in turn would be #2. The firing order is 1,3,4,2.which ever direction the rotor button turns. if it starts and runs ruff you are out of phase 180 degs. move the wires two ports in the cap as the rotor turns.
