i changed the oil and filter just before it turned cold do you think that something could have gone wrong?

  • nakia_berg Feb 04, 2009

when i plug into truck i get a code for transmission oil temperature out of range do you think that that would have something to do with it?

  • nakia_berg Feb 06, 2009

there is no slip with the overdrive off or in any other gears

I don't know the last time you had the trans. serviced but if your pulling alot of weight especialy in hot weather you should have it done alot more than normal, I would try that first, if that don't help, your looking at a rebuild or replacement, and if it does not have one an external oil cooler is a good idea too.

I havent seen one yet that when overdrive starts to go the rest is not far behinde. On most brands of trans. fluids, if you read the lable, they are compatible to all makes and models, unless it spesifies its not, thats the same from the cheapest to the most exspensive. the only auto maker that had a certain fluid for there cars and trucks was chys.

  • ccn7 Feb 04, 2009

I can't tell you what that means, did you contact the dealer about the code? i could be wrong, god knows i'am no expert i just go on experance and common sense, all i know is if its slipping in overdrive i can't believe a sensor will cause that. you have to look at it this way, how long have you been pulling the weight, everyday, once a week, once a month, how manny miles on truck, them are all factors you got to consider.

I would change the filter in the transmission and replace the trans fluid first.

the cooler could be plugged partially. There is one in the radiator and/or an external cooler.

Or, wrong fluid? check owner manual for correct fluid.

  • gerry bissi Feb 05, 2009

the code means the temp is either too hot or too cold. If tto hot, it means the trans is slipping a lot and overheating the fluid. If too cold, it may mean fluid is not flowing through the trans cooler and the sensor is reading air temperature because no flui is contacting the sensor. Try driving with the over drive "off" and see what happens.

It sounds like the overdrive clutch is leaking causing it to slip. That's an overhaul. Sorry.

On a 1985 Ford F250 diesel, with the 4 speed

I would replace fluid and filter. At least the fluid. Old fluid has bad temperature range protection and the inter cooler doesn't help cool the lines much.

Tranny slips in reverse

Reverse clutches are burnt. Clutch material is getting into valve body causing late shifts since valves can't move. transmisison will have to be overhauled. wish i had better news. sorry

Slips between gears.

well I guess I will say change the fluid again and change the filter- you simply do not have enough miles to be transmission failure- so my guess wil be the shift solenoid as well - contact dealer to confirm. They will have to change with solenoid anyway.I sold my last honda with 275,000 miles and it had a hard life- no issues ever
