Question about 2005 Subaru Forester

2005 Subaru Forester Stalling, lurching and hesitating

After getting an oil change at a national chain in November, my 2005 Subaru Forester (which previously had no problems) began hesitating/lurching on acceleration and occasionally stalling when stopped at lights. I took it to the dealer (still under warranty) and there were no codes and they couldn't find anything wrong. All the fluids were normal and they said the oil change guys didn't do anything to mess it up. They suggested it could be because of a different oil brand/blend/formula and to keep driving it.

Needless to say, it is still doing this. Although it is worse when the engine is cold, it also happens when the engine is warm. The problem seems to be mainly confined to the lower gears. Additionally, there is now a noise associated with acceleration. It sounds almost like a grinding sound. Just got another oil change and the problem persists. I took it to the dealer again yesterday but thought I'd see if there are any suggestions on here.

Thanks for your help.

Thanks for helping ewashmidas and zero-7! The answers to your questions:

The dealer is an authorized Subaru dealer.
The Check Engine light is not on.
The Cruise indicator is not flashing.
(There are no warning lights on whatsoever)
The problem exists on both damp and dry days.

I question that technician's mechanic ability as well. I don't think he ever popped the hood - I think he just hooked it up to their diagnostic machine and, when he didn't get any codes, called it a day.

    Thanks again!

    A few questions...

When you say the "dealer", do you mean an actual Subaru dealer ?

Is the amber "Check Engine" light on ?

Is the green "Cruise" indicator flashing ?

Is the problem worse on damp days ?

BTW...using a different oil would not cause the driveability problems you are getting. For this reason I question the "dealer" mechanic's ability.

Different oil brand/blend/formula? Thats a good one. As long as the oil was 5W30 it's not causing your problem. I would find a independent service center that specializes in Subaru's.

What is the interval for replacing a timing belt for a 2005 subaru forester

160,000 km major service. Anything over 150,000, think about getting it done, There's a set of bearing and the hydraulic tensioner (sometimes water pump) as well that should be done at the same time.

2000 subaru legacy stalls, jumpy, delayed when i give it gas

Oil leaking from old valve cover gaskets is common on Subaru engines. Once the plugs get oil on them it's best to replace the gasket, wires and plugs. Since that's been done, the next step would be a scan of live data to see what fuel trims and oxygen sensors and MAF sensor readings are. Also, a fuel pressure test. Until you do that, you really don't know what's going on. Don't replace any more parts until you get it diagnosed.
