Question about 2000 Ford Excursion

Interior Lights Stay On

My 2000 Ford Excursion XLT 6.8 V10 Auto Trans. keeps the interior
lights on for about 40 minutes after I park & close door. Also the lights
stay on while driving, which annoys me when I drive at night.
Any simple solution without taking it to a Ford dealer? Any suggestion
would be appreciated.

    Thanks, Chuck.

    The solution did not work.

By the way, the lights on the running boards also stay on after the engine is shut off. But the 'door adjar' indicator lights do not come on, unless a door is actually not fully closed, whis is not the case it seems.

My interior lights on my 1999 ford f150 stay on after all doors are shut. They do eventually shut off after 5 minutes or so. Very annoying

I have the same problem with my 01 Expedition. Interior lights would stay on even no the ajar door light is off on the dash. I pulled the #14 just so its off. Could it be a relay problem? I looked at mine and relay one is white and relay two is black. Not sure why.

This problem seems to be the same as mine. I have a 2001 Excursion. The interior lights (and running board lights) stay on. There is no apparent door ajar issue. The lights are on but in a "dimmed" state. One can clearly see the difference between this "dimmed on" state and the "fully on" state that occurs when the remote or door keypad switch is activated. Locking the doors with the remote or keypad (when the lights are supposed to turn off) return them to the "dimmed but on" state. The issue occured when I was traveling down the road at night with no one touching any switches. The only way I have found to bypass the issue is to remove the #14 fuse. I have not tried to wait the 45 minutes to see if the battery saver feature turns the lights off.

You have a door adjar light sticking in one of the doors or deck lid.
Take you a can of WD40 open each door and spray it into the latch on the on the side of the doors then open and close it a few times, this will take car of the problem most of the time. Start with the driver door first it is usually the one.

Well so much for the easy stuff.

Now its down to the GEM module, interior lamp relay, battery saver relay, or the interior lamp switch(on the headlamp switch).

Here is how the system works.

    Illuminated Entry
Illuminated entry is activated when a keyless entry keypad switch provides an input to the GEM or when the GEM receives an unlock signal from the remote keyless entry transmitter. The GEM then activates the battery saver and interior lamp relays by providing ground to the relay coils. Illuminated entry is deactivated when the GEM receives a lock signal from the remote keyless entry transmitter or if the GEM receives an input from the keyless entry keypad. Illuminated entry will also be deactivated when the GEM receives input voltage from the ignition switch.

    Battery Saver
The battery saver is activated when the GEM is not receiving voltage input from the ignition switch (off position). The GEM will then provide ground to the battery saver relay coil, activating the relay, for a period of 10 minutes with the interior lamp (headlamp) switch in the off position, or a maximum period of 45 minutes with the interior lamp (headlamp) switch in the on position, provided that the GEM does not receive any other input signals within the time-out period. The activated battery saver relay switches voltage to the demand lamp circuit and the interior lamp relay coil. After time-out, the GEM disconnects ground from the battery saver relay coil disabling the demand lamp circuit.

Are you sure that the interior lamp switch on the headlamp switch is not turned on? That would would explain why it is taking 40 minutes to cut off. Usually the battery saver relay will turn it off in 10 minutes otherwise.

You can try swapping the interior lamp relay and battery saver relay and see if that makes any difference. They will be the 2 top smaller relays in the interior fuse panel. The top one is the interior lamp relay and the 2nd one is the battery saver.

If you don't find anything there I would suggest its time to let the dealer look at it.

Oh almost forgot the easiest thing of all!

Check fuse 14 in the interior fuse panel (15amp)

Door ajar light

I found that when I opened the right rear door several times I could get the problem to clear. Once I got the problem to clear I tired to keep any one from using that door. Once they forgot and opened that door again I was back in trouble again! I finely replaced the switch in that door and problem was corrected. Wish you luck this can drive you crazy..

2003 Ford Excursion interior lights stay on after truck is turned off for 20 to 30 minutes, and door ajar light is always onbut all doors are closed.

One of the door switches is not showing an open contact. Which sugnals the computer that a door is ajar. Try blowunyg comoressed air into every door sqitch including the rear hatch. Afterwards, spray each switch with WD-40. Good Luck.

Just bought a used 2004 Excursion and the interior lights stay on until the battery wears down. would that be a bad roller switch for interior lights and dash lights?

Well, the lights on our 1998 Ford Taurus stay on for a 'limited' amount of time, say 20 minutes and automatically turn off, even if the door is left open or if the glove box light is left on due to a door left open.

I wonder if your body control computer is faulty in your 2004 Excursion?
Or, if the body control computer is fine, and it doesn't have this feature, then I would see if the door latch switch needs to have wd-40 sprayed on it.

We have a 1999 Ford Expeditioin that had this problem with the door open light going on when the door was actually closed. The tech sprayed wd-40 on the locking mechanism and the problem went away.

The interior lights and running board lights stay

Check your DOME light switch. There are 3 positions. Completely OFF even with doors open, ON with doors shut so you can read while parked, NORMAL for the lights to come on only when the doors are open.

Your headlight switch will also turn everything ON inside when it is turned completely to one side. Just twist this switch a little towards center if this is on.

Turn off the interior lights in 04 Excursion w/ back doors open?

If you wait long enough, the lights will turn off by themselves. Or if you turn the ignition back to accessories setting (ACC) and the radio should stay on and the interior lights should go off. Let me know at FixYa if I can be of further assistance. Thank you.

2000 Ford Excursion diesel when shut off interior and running board lights stay lit for long period of time or won't go out at all which in turn causes the cars battery to go dead.

You have a door ajar switch sticking in one of the doors. Start with the drivers door, open door and spray a liberal amount of WD40 into the latch on the side of the door. Then open and close the doors firmly several times. This usually unsticks them.
