2004 jeep liberty won't move when put in gear (like brakes are locked).crank it in neutral put in gear it will go till i touch brakes then won't move again.WHAT'S WRONG WITH THIS THING.

gear, is this a Manual trans? or AUTO you said gear.
what gear, please name the gear, 1,2,3,4,5 R
or PRNDL ( a/t box auto matic) what shift lever selection?
what is out door air temp, you do know brakes can get wet and freeze right?
it wont go you meant? until brakes are touched, key word won't?

ok engine only starts in PRNDL set to N??
is that it?
and then when you shift to D, the car will not move
what about the other gears.? try them all yet?

my guess (wild) is that you dont know how park lock out works.?
that you must hold the brake pedal down to shift to park or neutral.
is that it? (read operators guide?)

my guess is car is not drive-able. key point1 (a dead car)
point 2, engine starts and runs. and races on demand with gas foot.
point 3, im lost. (no trans stated or clear symptoms.)

my jeep has 6speed manual box
and the clutch allows me to start car.
on Automatics trans must be in park or neutral to crank engine.

"it will go till i touch brakes"

I read that 10 times,
my 2nd guess. the engine stalls ?

IS THAT IT, stalls means engine RPM is 0
and right foot actions are dead.
and all dash lamps glow, telling you STALL is now.

Why when running trans won,t shift gears

no year, no joy for us or you... impossible. all answers USA spec cars. and nobody ever says,,, so......

nor engine size stated, or trans box name.

wont shift hot or cold or both (engine temp)
?

wont, implies and A/t box. which one?

the 42RE.? (ill answer for this box)

keep in mind, im blind, i cant open car, nor drive it.

nor see under that hood.

wild guess, 2004

click WJ here. \' (end of my post)

then click trans case 2

see that and the 2 transmissions>

now my wild guess, 42RE

  1. levels wrong. and fluid pink/red, not back and metal flakes.

  2. fuses blown (yes, test them )

  3. filter never ever changed. #1 killer here.... so common.

  4. Scan the ECU/PCM. plug in (1996+) any scan tool , got DTC errors?

  5. bingo, i bet so far, huh>?

  6. stall tests fails? (yes it does, but and cold engine????.)

  7. Line pressure at spec?. (FSM trans test , in the book , read it?)

  8. Check that the TCM is sending the correct solenoid voltage for Drive mode?. next, if ok the trans is bad.

01 Impala LTZ with 3.8 Trans won't shift out of

CHECK TRANSMISSION FLUID LEVEL FIRST BUT IT SOUND LIKE YOU NEED A FLUID AND FILTER CHANGE IF TRANSMISSION FILTER STOPPED UP TRANSMISSION PUMP CAN DRAW FLUID THROUGH CLOGGED FILTER.WHEN ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION GET HOT FLUID WILL GET HOT AND THIN ENOUGH TRAVEL THROUGH FILTER SO CAR CAN SHIFT INTO OVER DRIVE.DO A FLUID AND FILTER CHANGE SEE WHAT HAPPENS.

Problem: Vehicle will not shift out of 2nd gear.

Well the main problems are just a few
1 auto box has a pump lock up due to oil in trans .
2 .the Filter in auto box sitting on the pick up pipe inside the oil pan'dirty also No1 above.
3. Body valve also in bottom of auto gear box which changes gears when the revs are at the right speed ,have pistons and valves in side which have to move when pressure is on and your is not changing
because the pistons could be stuck in 1 of 5 places
you could trying to fix it your self but if i was you i wouldent even try. so take it into the Auto shop and get it checked out now before it gets worse (Sorry)
Let me know how you get on Ron

1989 jeep cherokee 6cly auto trans shifts great after gets hot 10-15 min. but when cold shift very high 4500 rpms 1st-2nd and wont shift to 3rd almost like stuck in passing gear. when hot shifts great no...

Sometimes you tranny may just be low in which case add fluid. Be sure to check while engine is hot, most likely in park or nuetral. It will say on dipstick. Also if you havent changed the filter you may want to do that, sometimes crud gets built up and it will not circulate well unless hot. If you change the filter, be careful as usually there is not a drain plug and the only way is to drop the pan. If you do go that route I advise buying a drain plug and drill a hole in pan and replace with plug so in the future theres less mess and a whole lot easier job. Hope this helps. Be sure to read directions on drilling hole for plug and be sure its drilled somewhere on the pan that doesnt get in the way of anything underneath.

Transmission wont shift on 93 plymouth voyager

Do you know if you have a 3 speed trans or a 4 speed trans? If it is a 4 speed , the (D) on the shift indicator will have a box around it. I need to know which transmission you have, then I can help.
