Question about 2000 Ford Focus

1 Answer

Electrical failure Whenever it rains, my alternator light goes on, the doors lock up and general but inconsistent electrical quirks happen. On this particular occasion, after weeks of rain, my car refused to start - there was NO power even to the clock. After fiddling around with the battery and checking wires (but finding nothing) the ignition lights came on and we can roll start the car. If i turn the ignition on there are ticks and clicks behind the dash but no start. I've tried to find an answer considering the starter motor, but if i turn the lights on while i am driving all power is lost and the car jolts and dies - which makes me thinks it's an elecrical short.... I am not in an area where i can be sure the mechanics will have a clue and i would like to know if i can check a few things simply before bringing a stranger in to look. I have downloaded technical drawings for the wiring and engine parts. My gut instincts tell me it's water and electrics mixing. Any suggestions - or a common ford focus problem. Mine is a 2000 trend 2L hatchback.

On my old ford windstar.... water leaked by the passenger side window... ran across a beam under the dash and dripped right over the fuse panel... i suspect you have something similiar and the relays are filling with water. basically you need to locate the leak and then replace all the relays... as there are alot of them and the flasher relay is abit pricey i would suggest doing what i did which is to go to a junk/recycling/wrecking yard and locating a vehicle like you have.... ask them how much for all the relays (including the ones under the dash in the fuse box near the battery)... keep replace the ones you need to replace and keep the rest in the glove box... first place to look for the leak is along the window... if it has black plastic strips beside the windshield it is probably leaking there... lift them up and put a small bead of silicone caulking in the crack then push the plastic strip back in.. use some tape to hold it till it dries

Why is battery draining ford 2002 Taurus SES

Remove negative cable from battery, connect a test light to negative terminal, opposite end off light to negative battery post. ( let sit for 3 to 5 minutes). Then start pulling fuses, when the light goes out that's your bad circuit. God-Bless! Its worth a try.

Why does my nissan maxima door locks unlock themselves and there is a clickng sound

It sounds like there is an electrical fault with the Remote locking circuit. When you lock the vehicle, without seeing the schematic electrical drawing, there is a relay that will operate to lock the doors. This applies power to the small motors installed within the doors, that operate the locks open/close (Lock/Unlock). Generally there is an electrical componet that by passes the relay once the doors are locked so it doesnt burn out, e.g Capacior. With that in mind, if this component is shorting out, power will be applied and/ or released from the holding circuit which in turn, will operate the vehicles locking mechanism.
Best way forward
1. If you have a Gregorys manual, available from Super Cheap Auto for under $50, it will have the Electrical circuit drawing for the Door locks, if it's standard fit to the path finder. You will be able then, with the use of a Multi meter, to check out where power is getting to or not (12V dc).

2. If not give the Auto electrician $50 to fix.

As the Nissian is 24 years old, I would be looking for a electrical component failure.

I hope this helps you out mate,
Stevie C.

When you turn key on does it click repeatedly? When an alternator is going bad the electrical goes all kinds of crazy sometimes, you may want to start there if you havent chkd that yet.

run a status check on the pcm. sometimes those probs are in the computer. the loghts will come on when the remote is activated, and the door locks should lock automatically when you start to drive. if that doesn'tr happen, suspect a computer glitch.

Electrical sytem? inconsistently shuts car down

These engines have a sensor known as the Crankshaft position sensor, they are most of the time the part that causes these problems, it is located on the front of the engine, it gets it's signal from the crank pulley/harmonic balancer, if it goes open when hot the engine dies, when the sensor cools back down the eng will restart.
