Question about 2001 Ford Expedition

Slight power surges

I have a 2001 ford expidition. We love this truck but we have one small problem. When its really cold out and we are running front and back heaters ther is slight power surges. for example when all the heats are on the headlights and dash lights flicker slightly right in sinq with the motor running. once i shut the heats or air off the rpms pick up slightly back to normal and the lights remain steady. Does it seem like i have a underpowered battery or alternator.?

You might want to chk. your battery connections make sure there clean and tight, and any other ground straps you can find, you also might want to have your altinator chk. too. Have you notice any winning noise comming from altinator when you run alot of electrial, it could have a diod in alt. going bad or the regulator in alt. sticking or going bad or bearing going bad. chk. all bat. connections if it still does it after you do that have alt. checked.

Should the motor stay running when you unhook the battery on a 2000 ford expidition

Yes it will stay running as long as the altenator is working but thats not a good way to check the alt.It could send a voltage surge to the ecm or one of the other sensors and ruin the parts, that could get very expensive.

Where is the charge port on a 2001 ford expidition front and rear a.c. unit with a 4.6 ltr auto. trans.

the rear a/c unit uses the same a/c charge ports that the front unit uses, check freon pressures, low side should be between 35-45 psi. high side pressure should be from 225-250 psi. if pressures are within range then the most likely cause would be one of two most common problems and they are 1. rear orifice tube is restricted with debris. 2. rear temperature control (mode door) motor or actuator is inoperative.

What parts do I need to tune up a 2001 ford expidition 5.4 4x4

If your 5.4 is idling or running rough a common problem is a vacuum hose on the back top passengers side of the engine, It is really more of an elbow hose consisting of two different sizes.
To do a basic tune up all that is required are plugs, wires, pcv valve and a can of SeaFoam injector cleaner in a full tank of gas.

Motor runs cold

by the sounds of things your head gasket might be split you could get a compression test done at most local garages if there is any problem in the test then your head gasket is most likely blown and will need replaceing, its not a small job and might cost a bit.

ETC

You need to change the thermostat, it must be stuck open and the computer thinks the engine is always cold, hence the fast idle and smoke.
