1998 Honda Prelude RPM Issue

Bought a 98 Prelude (5spd) On the way home from the Beltway, in 5th gear I noticed that the RPM was running high when I was at 60mph around 3500-3900.....when at 80mph it was 4500 4700rpm....after driving like this for about 20 minutes the check enging light went on. The car shifts in all gears with out any issues...do you think the trans is done???

Thanks

The check engine light means that it has stored a code and you need someone with a scanner to read that for you. A five speed is a mechanical transmission and since you're able to drive in all five gears there's nothing wrong with that. (were you in 5th gear?) You could have a clutch problem; after you get the codes scanned get the clutch checked out. Good luck.

The transmission is probably on its way out. you might not have noticed when you test drove the car that it was running high rpms but youwould notice it on the highway.its probably on its last legs though

Mazda 2 has 105k miles. Why do I notice less acceleration and more RPM change?

If you accelerate especially when using high gears such as the 4th and 5th gear and the RPM is able to increase freely with the speed struggling to catch up with the RPM, it means your clutch is worn out and is slipping.

You need to get the clutch replaced in order for this issue to be rectified, especially if your clutch have not been changed before.

Lost speed.5th gear stoped working

old car. 5th gear? is this M/T? 1987 ?
A/T? is 4speed

what does stopped working mean .
1: shifter fails to select 5 gear H pattern slot.
2: grinds?
3: cant force it to 5th with clutch depressed.? is free play at spec?
4: raise front wheels off ground, can you get in to 5th now? keyout and running?
5: can you get into 5th parked engine off, and select 5th and then start car in 5th with clutch depresses first step. then slowly very slowly attempt to move car starting in 5th, but dont finish, just feel the gear, feel that its there and not neutral.

not working ,says nothing at all.

When im driving in 5th gear the RPM's seem high around 3500 is this normal?

I, also, thought this was high at first. After some research, I found that this car runs in that range at about 75 mph. So, yes. That is normal.

What is 'normal' rpm's for honda element

this is normal, every car is different, my Corvette is 2200 RPM at 60 MPH, why? very high overdrive gearing to take advantage of the huge V8 engine.

1992 honda prelude transmission wont go into gear

Sounds like the pressure plate! Try this, rev the engine for a sec then when it starts to slows down try to put it in reverse - if the gears grind, its the pressure plate which will come with the clutch kit for about 125-175.00.

:0)

*rack and pinion is steering not trans! Separate issue??

Jut bought used car today from Carmax. FOr some reason when in high gears (4th & 5th) and only running rpm's @ 3000 the a/c turns warm, and does not kick back in until in lower gear and after a few...

the freon is probably low, when you are at a high rpm the compressor is pumping faster causing the pressure to drop and when it drops the low pressure switch reconizes this and shuts the compressor down to avoid damage. now the condensation is coming from coldness of the low pressure line.

Wont shift into reverse

Regarding the reverse problem. If it's not going into reverse at all and the shifter seems to come up against a dead stop then it's probably the 5th gear synchro. I've recently had the same problem with my 99 prelude. The first time it happened I changed the reverse shift fork because the mechanism was worn. This worked for a while, however, the same thing happend a short while ago. I took my gearbox apart and a friend pointed out that there were some score marks on the synchro. I changed the 5th gear synchro, which is on the same selector rod as reverse gear. This has cured the problem. The synchro cost me £140 from Honda. Hope this is of some help to you.
