Question about 1996 Nissan Maxima

96 Maxima - Transmission or clutch prob?

I got stuck in the snow and pushed my Maxima pretty hard trying to get unstuck. I did redline in short surges, trying to rock the car out of the snow in 1st gear and grinded R quite a few times at high rpm's.
Now my car is still stuck and dies every time I left off the clutch in any gear and in neutral. Have I ruined my trans.? Or is it a clutch thing. Love my car and aggravated with myself for getting frustrated and treating it so roughly.

How do I get my key out of my Nissan Maximas ignition?

I don't know very much about cars myself, but I had the same problem with my 96 Nissan Maxima. It turned out that the button on the shifter knob wasn't releasing all the way, causing the key to be stuck in the ignition. I pushed on the button a few times to get it unstuck and the key came right out. Hope this helps.

Transmission shifts into reverse nice and smooth...shift into drive and there is no noise nor does it engage at all into drive??? This happened after car was stuck in snow...after shifting from drive and...

u should check ur transmission fluid to see if it is dark (burnt) if so ur gonna b outa luck u most likely burnt it up. fluid will also have a strong burnt smell if it is black. trannys build up alot of heat wen trying to get unstuck in snow an ice. diminished air flow through radiator or trans cooler wen stuck also adds more heat to the unit, especially wen running it hard on ice. they get hot really fast

Manual 5 speed transmission clutch stuck. It was cold. Clutch itself is good. It appears to be a linkage prob of some sort. The haynes manual wont help because it covers too many diff trucks. mine is a 96...

Your truck has a hydraulic clutch, check to see fluid is full in the clutch master cylinder, and see if fluid is leaking at the line or the slave cylinder, line could have broke, or master/slave cylinder needs replaced.

Nissan Maxima 2000 - 5 speed will not go into gear and the clutch gets stuck once pressed in. Is this strictly a clutch problem or could be a transmission problem also.

Sounds like your clutch slave cylinder is bad. It's only a minor, external problem, not an internal transmission problem.

If it is a standard transmission then it sounds like you wore out the clutch.

Are you aware of major transmission issues with 96 Nissan Maxima

Not many problems with the 5 spds, automatics have concerns.

96 escort manual 5 speed stuck in reverse

Is the stick moving? or is it 'stuck' in the reverse position as well? There are adjustments but it seems more likely that your 'stick' has come unstuck from the gear levers that actually put the gears in the right spot. Have someone look at the transmission while you move the stick to see if the levers are moving and put your response here.

Lost all gears in 84 f150 4speed inline 6 4.9

You need to see if driveshaft is turning before pulling out the trans--or look at the trans output shaft to see if it is spinning. Most trans problem wont be an entire loss of all gears(not in a stick shift anyway). It is alot easier to burn the clutch up or ruin a rear end than a tranny. More than likely clutch. Did it smell like burned up brakes or some pungent odor like that while you were getting unstuck? Also trans failure would have been associated with alot of nasty noises--not just working one moment and not the next. Clutches burn up in silence. Just nasty smell. Thanks

97 Maxima stuck in snow, but no wheel movement?

mbogucanin82: There are potentially a number of things it could be.
1. If one of the drive axles popped out of the transaxle, you can put it in ay gear you want but the car will not show any signs of even an attempt to move.
2. I you broke an inner CV joint, it would demonstrate the same,
A broken outer joint would have the drive axle flailing away under the car.
3. If this has a manual transmission, the clutch could have come apart which would make it impossible to transfer power from the engine to the input shaft of the transmission.
4. If it is a automatic, have you checked the level of fluid in the transmission? It is possible you may have damaged a cooler line which would cause the fluid to be pumped out when you started the engine.
I would venture that you will find the solution in one of these that I listed and you won't have to wait for the snow to thaw.
Good Luck>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

If you havent already try to change the transmission filter.Sometimes when the filter gets dirty fluid pressure is comprimised and certain pumps and solenoids which control shifting inside the transmission function off of the fluid pressure,
