I have the same problem and Auto Zone and Advanced Auto both suggested I go online for assistance. I did so and could not find the information I was needing without paying for the cd/book.

How to change plugs on 02 kia sportage

  • 1

Keep a regular schedule for inspecting the spark plugs on your 2002 Kia Sportage. According to the official 2002 Kia Sportage owner's manual, spark plugs and ignition wires should be inspected every two years or 48,000 miles, whichever comes first.

  • 2

Let your 2002 Kia Sportage sit for a few hours before opening the engine compartment. You want to make sure that the engine is cool before you begin working on it.

  • 3

Pop open the hood of your Sportage and locate the ignition wires, which will be attached to the top of your engine. The 2002 Kia Sportage has a four-cylinder engine, meaning there are four spark plugs each attached to an ignition wire. The ignition wires run from the engine to the fuse box, which is located in the left side of the engine compartment.

  • 4

Inspect the ignition wires of your 2002 Kia Sportage. These wires will need to be replaced if they appear worn.

  • 5

Disconnect the ignition wire to your spark plugs. Grab the rubber boot located near the base of the wire and pull upward instead of yanking on the wire. Remove only one wire at a time, or mark the wires with a colored Sharpie marker before disconnecting all of them. Improperly reconnecting the ignition wires can seriously affect the performance of your Kia Sportage.

  • 6

Attach the spark plug socket to your socket wrench. Use the socket wrench to remove the spark plug from the top of the engine's cylinder.

  • 7

Inspect the spark plug. There will be some soot, but if the spark plug is completely covered in soot, it needs to be replaced.

  • 8

Position your replacement spark plug in place and secure it with the spark plug socket on your socket wrench. Be careful not to overtighten the spark plug after it has been snuggly fitted.

  • 9

Position the rubber boot of the proper ignition wire in place above the spark plug and insert it with your hands. Close the hood of your 2002 Kia Sportage

My 2002 Kia sportage 4wd keeps jumping into 4wd while driving and it make an awful noise

I had the same problem on my 99 sportive. It turns out that there is a vacuum leak in the hubs. I solved it by changing the auto hubs to manual hubs and have had not problem since. When I lock the hubs in 4wd I hear a winning from the wheals but not that nasty noise. I hope that his helps with your problem. Chris Tina

Kia sportage not going into 4 wheel drive when selected could this be diaphrams ?

with 4wd engaged check that the front tailshaft to the diff does not turn more than 45* if this is ok and no 4wd light check bulb switch and wiring. if light ok you will need to track down vacuum leak to drive hubs fault { common fault } you can check 4wd operation by raising one front wheel with handbrake on and car in netural select 4wd with engine running if 4wd ok raised wheel will not turn more than 45* by hand and will spin free when 4wd disconnected

Does the 2002 Kia Sportage have an noninterference engine or does it have an interference engine?

2002 Kia Sportage 2.0L dohc, is an interference engine, will cause piston to valve damage, Kia recommends timing belt replacement in California every 90,000 miles, except California every 60,000 miles, hope this was very helpful.

2001 Kia sportage light indicates the 4WD is engaged but it is not

IT IS PROBABLY THE LOCKING DIFFERENTIAL. IT USES A VACUUM TO LOCK IN THE FRONT WHEELS. CHECK TO SEE IF THE HOSES ARE ROTTED OR CHRACKED OR TORN. OR IT COULD BE THE VACCUM TANK OR PUMP IS BAD

Timing belt broke on 1998 kia sportage, need the correct points

Hi, Just to clarify and clear things up, the motor used in the 1998 to 2002 Kia Sportage is actually the Mazda FE3 engine and it is a NON-INTERFERENCE engine.

For any an all repair information on any Kia vehicle produced you can access the KGIS system (Kia Global Information System), just go to www.kiatechinfo.com and create and account (its completely FREE). After you do this you will have access to all the Kia Shop Manuals, DTC Manuals, Recall information for your vehicle and more.

I just had the same problem with my Sportage and found all the information that I needed through KGIS. Hope this helps and good luck on fixing your Sportage.
