Question about 1999 Dodge Ram

Switching tranny in 1997 dodge with a 1994 dodge

Both transmissions look identical, Everything is the same except for ONE small thing. The wiring harness. Is there any kind of converter I can find? The newer dodge has a 8-prong harness and the older has a 4-prong harness. I just spent 10 hours pulling 2 trannies to find out it's an electrical problem. Is there any way to convert it?

Nope. Not that I have ever heard of. They (Chrysler) switched trannies in 1996. Anything earlier won't work. I found out the hard way just like you. They had so many problems with the 94 & 95 trannies that when they changed them they made it impossible to interchange them. Next time you do a job like that check with the parts interchange book at your local salvage yard or online. Sorry I couldn't help you, but one good thing the earlier trannies go out so often that they're not many around, so you may be able to sell it to offset your labor.

By the way, If you do change your tranny, don't use a used torque converter. Spend the few extra bucks and buy a new one, also install a cooler for your transmission fluid and disconnect the one that goes to the radiator. The BIG problem Dodge was having with their trannies was the webbing inside of the converter was made of aluminum and under torque it would flex thus causing it to eventually start to crack and shed shaving and bit of metal floating aound in your tranny fluid eventually causing your tranny to go out. I know this because I am on my 5th tranny in 8 years in my 95 1500 Ram. The last one has lasted over 3 years now,(knock on wood).

Why won't my 97 dodge caravan auto transmisson shift as speed increases, transmission fluid level is good?

Could be running in 'limp mode'. This is due to a faulty sensor in the transmission or wiring problem. It is a way the computer protects your transmission from damage due to a bad signal from the transmission sensors . Other recommendations from the Dodge forum are:
"stuck in limp mode there are a few things you can do to fix the car with out putting a new tranny if you really dont need one. First thing to do would be to change in/output sensors on tranny. $16 ea. Also check the tranny solenoid pack on tranny and check contact points clean out all oil if any in there. Clean really well. This is the problem I had. When oil gets inside of tranny solenoid pack it may ground out causing the service engine soon light to come on. I noticed on mine there was burnt oil and one contact point on the female plug was kind of burnt and black colored. What I did was clean with a needle so the male pin can make a clean contact. I also opened the bad pin with a needle to make it fatter so it will make a nice contact. I put all together and everything worked!! Dodge designed the part incorrectly causing many problems with these vans." Hope this helps.

Is a 1997 jeep tranny the same as a 1994 dodge ram tranny

If the numbers match they will interchange. This is the only way to see. there is usually a tag on the bell housing. Some of thier transmissions look exactly the same, but they have different gear ratios.

Had new tranny put in my 1997 dodge caravan. now it won't start. put new starter put in, new starter relay, alternator checked out, battery good. now what?

The neutal safety switch is probably your culprit. It is on the transmission. Make sure all the electrical wireing connections are good.

Dodge 1500 wants to run hot

installing a bigger radiator could solve the problem, installing a transmission cooler might solve the problem, or it could be a camshaft problem. worst case - the transmission could be going out !!!

The crankshaft position sensor may have been damaged during the tranny swap. It is on the top right side of the block at the rear of the engine.

Will a 4l60e tranny from 1994

i do believe they are different transmissions. i know my '95 chevy pickup 5.7 is a one year only transmission for correct fit. best thing to do is call local junkyard. they have great interchange guides and could tell you if it will work and what things may need to be changed
