Question about 1988 GMC S-15

High idle at start up low or high idle during driving

I have a 02 s10 newer type with no egr system or fuel pressure regulator. The truck has an issue of ideling high at startup then after warm choking down at stop signs or slow speed turn so on. Sometimes it will give more gas and idle higher than it should. I have done a complete tune up new fuel filter plugs wires inspected distribuator and button fuel pressure is good vacum is good new iac new tps new rear 02 sensor new maf new map new fuel filter tested ignition module inspected distributor gear for endplay runout and wear cleaned injector repeatedly cleaned intake replaced temp sensor no luck at all...

I took it to the dealer they reset the crank sensor iac and tps flashed the ecm and still have no clue even after trouble shooting. Local mechanics stumped. Help....

    The sensor was replaced guage was fine. There is only one sensor for both the ecm and gage no seperate sending unit on the late 02 model.



    Vacume was checked several times from cold to hot.

    Double check that vacum,cold and hot.Was the coolant sensor replaced for ecm or gage/light?

Over fueling at Idle/low revs causing rough run and engine stall suddenly.


Possible causes of your issue:
  1. Clogged air filter
  2. Bad fuel pressure regulator (most likely)
  3. Sticky idle air controller (also likely)
  4. Burned or stuck EGR valve, or bad EGR solenoid
  5. Bad throttle position sensor (especially if the "Check Engine" light is on or flashing)
  6. Bad oxygen sensor (especially if the "Check Engine" light is on)
  7. Water in fuel or bad fuel
What to do:
  • Start by removing the air filter to see if the problem persists. If the air filter is dirty, replace it.
  • Next, verify that the Check Engine light is operating by turning the key ON but not starting the vehicle. The Check Engine light should be illuminated. If not, replace the Check Engine light bulb.
  • If the Check Engine light is ON when you start the car, try feathering the accelerator pedal to see if the base idle stabilizes or changes. If it does, replace the TPS (Throttle Position Sensor). This is a fairly inexpensive part.
  • If the Check Engine light is FLASHING, or ON, next you will need to have a local mechanic or your local auto parts store attach an ODB scanner to determine what error codes are present. This will help you pinpoint the issue.
  • Once you have pinpointed and corrected any issues present using the ODB codes, you will need to attach a FUEL PRESSURE GAUGE to the fuel rail test point to determine if the fuel pressure is correct. If it is too high, the FUEL PRESSURE REGULATOR has failed. Again, this is an inexpensive part but the fuel system pressure must be released before servicing this part. Best done by a qualified mechanic.
  • HAS THE CAR SAT UNUSED FOR A PROTRACTED AMOUNT OF TIME WITHOUT FUEL BEING REMOVED OR ADDED? If so, the condition you are describing may be a result of bad fuel. Modern fuels contain ethanol, which causes moisture to condense in the tank when it is not agitated. This can cause water to build up in the fuel, and causes the fuel system to rust as well as an idle issue that resembles what you are describing. Try adding new fuel, and add a full bottle of FUEL SYSTEM WATER REMOVER. Remember: IF FUEL IS ALLOWED TO SIT IN YOUR VEHICLE'S TANK (without new fuel being added) FOR MORE THAN SIX MONTHS, IT WILL GO BAD.

you have a gross air leak (vacuum) to the intake plenum

The fuel pressure is low and it wont move the code that it gave me was po1401 what does that mean

Egr vacuum solenoid


Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) System Monitor—Differential Pressure Feedback EGR The Differential Pressure Feedback EGR System Monitor is an on-board strategy designed to test the integrity and flow characteristics of the EGR system. The monitor is activated during EGR system operation and after certain base engine conditions are satisfied. Input from the ECT, CHT, IAT, TP and CKP sensors is required to activate the EGR System Monitor. Once activated, the EGR System Monitor will perform each of the tests described below during the engine modes and conditions indicated. Some of the EGR System Monitor tests are also performed during on demand self-test.
  1. The differential pressure feedback EGR sensor and circuit are continuously tested for opens and shorts. The monitor looks for the Differential Pressure Feedback EGR circuit voltage to exceed the maximum or minimum allowable limits.

    The DTCs associated with this test are DTCs P1400 and P1401.
  1. The EGR vacuum regulator solenoid is continuously tested for opens and shorts. The monitor looks for an EGR Vacuum Regulator circuit voltage that is inconsistent with the EGR Vacuum Regulator circuit commanded output state.

    The DTC associated with this test is DTC P1409.
  1. The test for a stuck open EGR valve or EGR flow at idle is continuously performed whenever at idle (TP sensor indicating closed throttle). The monitor compares the Differential Pressure Feedback EGR circuit voltage at idle to the Differential Pressure Feedback EGR circuit voltage stored during key on engine off to determine if EGR flow is present at idle.

    The DTC associated with this test is DTC P0402.
  1. The differential pressure feedback EGR sensor upstream hose is tested once per drive cycle for disconnect and plugging. The test is performed with EGR valve closed and during a period of acceleration. The PCM will momentarily command the EGR valve closed. The monitor looks for the differential pressure feedback EGR sensor voltage to be inconsistent for a no flow voltage. A voltage increase or decrease during acceleration while the EGR valve is closed may indicate a fault with the signal hose during this test.

    The DTC associated with this test is DTC P1405.
  1. The EGR flow rate test is performed during a steady state when engine speed and load are moderate and EGR vacuum regulator duty cycle is high. The monitor compares the actual Differential Pressure Feedback EGR circuit voltage to a desired EGR flow voltage for that state to determine if EGR flow rate is acceptable or insufficient. This is a system test and may trigger a DTC for any fault causing the EGR system to fail.

    The DTC associated with this test is DTC P0401. DTC P1408 is similar to P0401 but performed during KOER Self-Test conditions.
  1. The MIL is activated after one of the above tests fails on two consecutive drive cycles.
0a01005.gif EGR Vacuum Regulator Solenoid The EGR vacuum regulator solenoid (Figure 88) is an electromagnetic device which is used to regulate the vacuum supply to the EGR valve. The solenoid contains a coil which magnetically controls the position of a disc to regulate the vacuum. As the duty cycle to the coil increases, the vacuum signal passed through the solenoid to the EGR valve also increases. Vacuum not directed to the EGR valve is vented through the solenoid vent to atmosphere. Note that at 0% duty cycle (no electrical signal applied), the EGR vacuum regulator solenoid allows some vacuum to pass, but not enough to open the EGR valve.

  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable (14301). For additional information, refer to Section 414-01 .
  1. Disconnect the vacuum hoses and the EVR solenoid electrical connector.
  1. Remove the two nuts and the EVR solenoid (9J459).
From the looks of the rubber mounting, I would say it's mounted on the cowl (firewall) on the passenger side in the engine compartment.
