Question about 1996 Lincoln Town Car

Car would not stop

When I pressed on the brake pedal the brakes were pulsating but the car did not stop. After releasing the pedal the brakes seemed to work fine on the rest of the way home

    the road was dry and the pedal went to the floor and did not stop until it rear ended a jeep

    Sounds like you had a anitlock brake event. Was the pedal pulsing rapidly and making a sound like a motor or pump running? When abs activates contrary to popular believe they do not stop you faster,in fact they may even increase the stopping distance but you will not loose control. They can actually feel scary because you don't think you are gonna stop.

    Now the question is if this was what happened was the road slick at this time or do you think it was a false activation?

You need to have your brakes checked TODAY. They at least need the air bled out of them and adjusted but possibly you need a wheel cylinder ir caliper rebuilt or replaced. You have a leak somewhere.

Prake pedal pulsates

Abs subaru outback 1999 not light, no error codes but does not work.


Have the abs removed and checked for operation. If you press the pedal hard enough to produce a skid but it doesn't then the abs is working. Under heavy braking from speed you will get a pulsating feeling in the pedal as the brakes are released and then re applied very quickly. If you are finding that no mater how hard you press there appears to be no assistance to brake then the problem will be in the booster and not the ABS.

My break light swithes on sometimes without me even pressing the breaks. The break light also sometimes stays on even when I have taken my feet off the break. I have tried changed the break light switch...


Did you adjust the brake light switch correctly? To adjust the brake light switch, first press the brake pedal down a few inches, then pull the switch plunger rod out of the switch toward the brake pedal arm, as far as you can without using excessive force. Next, return the brake pedal to the pedal stop position against the pedal stop and pull the brake pedal toward the rear to push the brake light switch actuating plunger rod into the switch housing limited by the travel of the brake pedal arm rear travel stop position. This procedure automatically adjusts the brake light switch correctly.
If the brake lights still don't turn off with the brake pedal released, check the brake pedal arm for sticking or binding that is preventing the brake pedal arm from returning fully to the pedal stop when the brake is released.

When braking on my '04 Suburban, it pulsates like it has a warped brake rotor, but rotors are true (all four), and there is no correlating pulsation in the brake pedal, nor in the steering. Also, this...


Try pulling the fuse for the anti-lock braking system. If the problem goes away with the ABS disabled, check the wheel rotation sensors for problems, especially cracked or broken mounts or wiring issues. I'm thinking a sensor is dropping out when it gets heated by the brake and feeding bad data to the controller. The controller than treats it as a low traction situation and starts pulsing the brakes. If this is the case, you would see an ABS or Low Traction warning light on your dash.

Another possibility is a worn or loose suspension component oscillating under braking stress. In particular, check the shock absorber mounts. You could also have a pad that chatters instead of gripping the rotor cleanly - this may leave marks on the rotor, and would probably produce an audible noise.

I have 2002 silverado, the brake pedal pulsates and pushes back as the vehicle is slowing to a stop.I replaced the pads and rotors and the p loblem still exists. I now believe this isABS related.

Brakes seem to stick.


If you have rear drum brakes then a brake shoe could have come apart causing the wheel to grab and skid on the pavement. If you can see external signs of dark wet areas that would be a leaking brake cylinder which can also cause the brakes to grab. The other possibiity, more common with disc brakes, is that a brake calliper is closing, but is not releasing properly when you let off the brake pedal. This would require replacement of the disc caliper on the wheel where it is grabbing.
Warped rotors can also cause the brake to "grab" when you don't want them to, but generally it will grab and release with a "pulsating' feeling if that's the problem.

ABS brakes not working


If you can feel the pedal pulsating and the light turns on the Abs is doin its job. if you want a better stop you could try a brake pad upgrade to ceramic pads and for even more stoping power add an after market drilled and sloted rotors.
