My 2004 f-250 sd 6.0 l diesel stalls

I took my truck to a mechanic for general inspection but since then the truck is stalling to a point that it hardly moves. When I stop the truck for about 10 minutes and restart it drives normally only to happen again after a few miles. So I had the fuel filters changed but the same keeps happening. Help!

Hi ! I have tried to drive with the fuel cap off and have also checked the breather pipe as well. Further I had the fuel filters changed along with the air filter and oil chang and filter but the problem persists. Thanks

I changed the EGR valve and drove with the fuel cap off. Now the truck mostly drives finr but it smokes very very badly and it seems to have trouble starting. Further there is a very loud knocking that accompanies the increase in rpm.

U need to have the injectors pulled and tested, the knock is most likely a result of over fueling, this would account for the smoke as well, have u had this to a Ford shop where they have proper test equip for this diesel, it is digital fuel injection and depends on many inputs to run correctly, there may also be numerous technical service bulletins to correct this issue, but unless u go to Ford u will never find out. I am a Ford dealer Tech of 20 years, and I am familiar with issues like yours.
ginko did u read the post, this a diesel, u gave advice for a gas engine s far as I can tell.

Hi there.

When the problem happens you should try at least to understand if it is a fuel problem, or a distribution problem.

Try to see if the car is misfiring, or die suddenly, or if the engine is just losing power as when you get out of petrol.

The best thing to know what the problem is is getting an ECU scan.
This means connecting your car computer unit to a code reader and getting error codes in return. The error codes will tell you where the problem is.

Here is an example of code reader: Actron CP9175 AutoScanner OBD II ...

Most likely cuased by and injector failure which may show up with oil diluted with fuel.Check this by removing dipstick and wipe clean then reinsert into dipstick tube only until dipstick handle reaches top of dipstick tube. Remove the dipstick and inspect indicator area If oil level is below the MAX mark then it is ok. If it is at or above it may be diluted with fuel and you would have to have injectors checked for leak down.

The first thought that comes to mind is a high pressure oil leak. The injectors have a snap ring on top that sometimes becomes detached and it will create these symptoms.

You may have a leak around the pump area which is under the turbo also. The IPR which is the regulator that controls the oil pressure may alsobe bad. It is directly under the turbo as well.

hello I am having a issue with my santa fe diesel and currently suspecting that the oil that the service center is using is a generic oil used in both diesel and petrol engines. I am suspecting that the oil is too thin and causing compression in the cylinder issues and can be seen under load on low revs and very little responsiveness from the accelerator and at times the engines misses and has at one point stalled. You may also hear that the engine rattles on acceleration. I am going to experiment in putting in an oil particularly for diesels only and see if that makes a difference. I topped up 500ml before the last service on a 5w-40 diesiel synthetic oil and that seemed to make a big difference. I am guess 5w-30 will be better choice but did not have that sitting around at the time.
Be interested if anyone else experiments with an oil change and it works.

Pick up a copy of Haynes Diesel Engine Repair Manual, Part # 10330, at your local auto parts store. It has an excellent diagnostic section, check page 1-44. It's a must have for a diyer with a diesel motor. It costs about $20.
