Question about 1987 Nissan Pickup

1 Answer

Alternator and power loss

One day the truck decided it no longer needed to hold power. all symptoms point to an alternator. when I unhook one of the battery cables the engine dies. If I get a jump and unhook the jumper cables, the car dies shortly after. I bought a new alternator and the same problem. The wiring looks good, but as a student I can not afford to take it to a shop. Ideas anyone?

Sudden loss of power

Are you sure the battery is being drained during this process? That would be a major draw from something, but then you said "...suddenly full power again,". It sounds more like a connection or a terminal working loose at times, not able to pass normal voltage. You sure need a voltmeter, my friend.

I think I would want to have that new alternator tested again, just to make sure it is not defective. A lot of aftermarket parts are turning up like that. Did you replace the alternator and battery because this condition was present? Do you know your battery cables and ground points are all good and secure, and corrosion free? You might want to double check all the grounds you can find- the battery negative cable, the engine to body strap, or cable, maybe an engine and computer harness ground point-look around the top of the engine for a ground wire coming out of the engine wire harness and going to ground at a nearby bolt. Also check all alternator connections.

If you have to keep looking, look at the power side of the power distribution scheme. From the battery, power goes to the Power Distribution Center, maybe called a junction box or junction is where the fuse and relay block under the hood receives power, both from the battery and the tie-in from the alternator, and then distributes it to the major circuits for the car. With all your symptoms, it sounds like the problem is not far from the battery in the power distribution. Sayeth Dr. monte. Good luck.

Have the alternator tested it may have a defective diode in the rectifier, this can cause very strange symptoms. Please don't go out and buy a part until a properly rtrained tech checks thios for you.

Alternator fuse 96 galant

Hi erose5450, I'm glad to help!

If you have had the Alternator checked and checked good then you have another problem. NOTE: Most all alternators have a fusible link that runs off the back of the alternator and sometimes that link will blow just like a fuse. Here's what you do: Find that wire at the back of the alternator it should be help in place by the same nut that the positive wire is help by. Unhook the negative battery cable then take the nut off and free that wire from the other wiring then pull on it real hard and see if it gets longer, if it does, that means its blown and needs to be replaced. Hope this helps and have an awesome day.

The power loss light goes on as a result of the alternator being bad.
Are you getting 'lifetime' guaranteed rebuilt alternators to replace the old ones?
If not, then the quality of the parts may not be good enough to run in your application.

Are the connections clean and shiny when removed?

Power steering loss, overheating, dash board power

It sounds to me like the serpetine belt broke, DO NOT continue to drive it. The water pump (for engine cooling), the power steering pump, and the alternator (electrical system) are no longer operating. Have it towed to a shop or have someone put a new belt on it.
