Im thinking my starter needs to be replaced, how much would that cost at a mechanic shop.... my car wont start after i repeatedly charged it and jumped it.... the green light indicator on the battery was good but now its not on anymore.. someone suggested its probably my starter....
Re: how much to fix the starter in my 97 oldsmbile...
Maker sure you have proper voltage. Anything less then 12.2 will cause a starter to act like its OUT.
Commonly looking at around 300 bucks for a new starter and shop rate to replace.
Check that battery first. thats my guess. especailly since you have been jumping it. The cells are probably too dead to hold any charge and its sucking up all the voltage from the car your jumping from. Especially in COLD weather. GOOD LUCK! -jeff

If you take the head off and take it to an automotive machine shop for the valve work, pressure testing, inspection, and cleaning (by hot tank), you are looking at about 200-300 dollars, depending on locale and shop prices. Then you could buy the gasket set for about $75 and put it all back together. Know what you are doing and buy a repair manual to follow procedures. If it is a timing belt and not a timing chain, go with a new belt-not very expensive, under $25- and good insurance to also put in a new water pump.
If you have a shop do all the work, it will get expensive fast. Most head jobs cost a minimum of about $750. And most shops will send the head to a machine shop for that work involved, so add that to the cost.
take it to a local muffler shop, ask them to put your car up on a lift when they get a free moment and point out the starter to you. access is almost always easier when the car is up on a lift. starters are all in the same place, parallel to the crankshaft, and bolted into the transmission bell housing. if you think it is bad, give them forty bucks and they will most likely swap it for you, just takes a few minutes if you have the tools and the car is up on a lift.
I think you will find that you have to take it to the shop. The valve lifters are located on the camshaft which in the 97 neon is located in the middle of the engine you would need to pull the cylinder heads off to get there, I dont think it will be a quick fix, im sorry good luck
Do you remember the last time the fuel filter was change? If you don't, do that first, it could be pluged. If that don't work or is not an issue, have a fuel pressure test done to see if fuel pump is weak, and ready to go out, or already has.
I just replaced my radio on my 97 olds so im thinking it should be the same. You have to completely remove the lower dash. this involves popping many of those lock things but be careful cause they break easy. Also you will need to remove multiple screws from around the lower dash, then it will just drop down and you can remove the radio.
