My 1998 Camry has a LOUD clanking sound coming from the engine. Also around 100,000 miles. It seems to run fine, but the sound is so loud that it's obvious that something in the engine is broken. Paid a local mechanic $65 for a diagnosis. He claims it needs a new engine which he says he can get and install for about $1500, but he'll want to do it in my driveway to avoid having to deal with sharing the job with the shop he works at. Not sure if I can trust him, not to say anything about warranty or the condition of the replacement engine he would be putting in there. He offered me $500 for the car, but I'm more inclined to get it fixed since I really like the car. Asked a really competent shop about a replacement and they quoted about $4,000 ... way over my budget and probably about what the car may be worth all total. Not sure what to do from here and would appreciate any feedback at all. Thanks.

If its sounds like its under the valve cover then it would be a valve lash adjuster on the rocker.

Have you checked to see if its coming from your alt, because when the bearings start going out on them they tend to give off a knocking noise that sounds like its the engine. Place your hand on it while its running and see if you can feel the knocking rythem.

i wouldnt go with changing engine in drive way because he dont want to share money. Just because you have a knock dont mean you need a new engine. Let me know if you still need info on this.

Why is there a very loud knocking sound in my 2000 camry engine?

The short answer is there is something loose or broken inside the engine.
Someone will need to narrow down where the noise is coming from and then the actual source. The engine may have to be disassembled to find out.

It sounds like you have a iol sludge problem. Take it to the dealer and they should repair it for free if you have oil change reciepts and it has less than 100,000 miles.

Rattleing and knocking noise in engine when running. Fades in and out.

Sounds like a main or connecting rod bearing is starting to go.Need to be more specific of when and how often it dose this. Also how many miles on engine. If your talking 100,000 or more its definitly a bearing. The more your run this engine (if its a bearing) the more damage your doing.Either way it dosent sound good.If this is a 350 or 305 engine if the oil wasent changed regularly these engines are known for bearing knocks.

Engine makes loud knocking noise that seems to be coming from the very top of the engine. I should note that this car has 175000 miles on it

Knocking noises from the overhead cam may be making the noise in question. Maybe a bad bearing on the camshaft or a spun cam.

175,000 mi. is a lot of miles for an engine, it may have been over revved at some point, or suffered from oil starvation or dirty oil with a prior owner.

2008 infiniti g37 motor is knocking has 16500 miles on it.

Please change the oil now at the Nissan garage and watch the vehicle closely.

$100 is not so much like getting your car totally knocked.

Good luck and rate this solution/ suggestion.

Is very light knocking noise from 1997 328i 6v BMW a concern?

hi, you will need to be very carefull if you buy this car, a knocking engine noise on a engine that has covered this sort of milage may not sound bad at the moment but you could be letting yourself in for an exspensive repair in the near future, these engines suffered with the bore liners wearing and the only repair is a new engine block or replacement engine, regards mark.

Engine knock

The idle issue is normal. The idle is controlled by the ECU. There are no adjustments for the idle. Regarding the knocking noise, that could be several things, and I am hesitant to comment without hearing it. Take it to a Toyota Dealer & have a tech listen to it. We are very good at identifying noises on the service drive.
