Re: Need to know how to replace outside door handle on 97...
On your door the inside the panel is removable. remove the screws in the handle on the inside and take it off. Once you get the panel off just reach up in the door and remove the connectors and remove the handle and replace.
A 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.

Are you saying the inside door handle isnt snapped, but the door wont open by pulling on the inside door handle or is it the outside door handle thats not working??Both the inside and outside door handle has a spring and other components on the backside of the handle which cant really be seen unless you remove the whole door handle assembly. One of these components are most likely broken or the rod that attaches between each handle and the locking mechanism(part that locks into the door striker to keep the door closed and releases it too)might have come loose from the back of the handle. The outside handle is usually mounted to the door by pop rivets or bolts/nuts.The inside handle is usually mounted with screws, but it really depends on what kind of car youre driving.Youll probably have to remove the handle to inspect it for damage.Open the door and watch the locking mechanism for movement while youre pulling on the door handle. If it doesnt move when you pull on the handle, the handle is definitely broke or the rod has come loose from the back of the handle.
you didn't say, but assume you mean outside handle. You will need to remove the inner door panel to get at the mechanism, get a new one at the wreckers of dealer. Carefully remove and replace, making sure the rods are connected properly. If you are not handy, leave it to a professional.
Inside or outside handle?? You can get the door open but you should have a new handle when you do and you will have to know how to change it so need to know inner or outside handle and what year the vehicle is etc.
assuming you mean the outside hande, get a replacement from the auto wreckers or dealer, remove inside door panel, remove old handle paying attention to how things connect to it, put in new handle and reattach rods etc.
tHE DOOR PAIEL IS SURRONDED WITH 6 TO 8 PLATIC RETAINERS THAT SNAP INTO THE DOOR FRME.WHEN YOU TRY TO POP THEM OUT FROM THE DOOR FRAME BE CAREFUL NOT TO SNAP OF THE RETAINERS. yOU CAN DO THIS WITH A SCREWDRIVER. " may be a screw in the door handle or the pull handle. Sorry about the caps lock was on. hope this helps. Tommy
Make sure window is up. Remove inner door panel. Disconnect latch mechanism. Should be a few nuts holding handle on. Unscrew them. Install front door outside handle frame sub-assembly. Using a torx wrench (Usually T30) install the outside handle.
The inside handle or the outside? to get the outside handle off you need to remove the inside door panel. It's wise to remove this panel in a warm place as the plastic parts and clips ten to break instead of pop apart as they don't bend well when cold. With the panel removed theirs a plastic seal that can be removed and you can see inside the door. looking at the handle from the back side thier'll be nuts holding it on. If you have the replacement handle you'll see the atteching points on it. If the handles broken thiers no point in removeing it until a new handle is in hand. If your not sure the handle is broken but need to remove it to find out, it's wise to it completly badck together even if it's not fixed so all the parts are where they belong not laying around to get lost or damaged.
you need to remove the inside door panel first. there will be a screw at the inside door handle and two screws for the armrest in the center of the panel. look around the outside edges of the panel for any other screws or clips to remove. the rest of the clips are behind the panel and snap when you pull on the panel. once off with the window up you can see the door handle screws. two of them. remove the connecting rods first.depending on which door you may have a lock rod also. then remove the screws and the handle will come out. good luck
You're probably refering to the outside rear. I had to replace my left rear on a 2002 Impala. It's plastic, and if you don't use the back doors very often, they tend to stick, and snap goes the door handle.
Door handles are available on Ebay for $20-25. Make sure you order the ciorrect one. They are all different.
Remove the door panel. Remove the two nuts to the door handle. It will now be easier to remove the clip and rod to the latch. As I recall, it's easier to remove the rod from the latch, then remove the handle with the rod attached. Transfer the rod to the new handle before installing into the door.
