Question about 1997 GMC Jimmy

When starting every thing goes dead.

When I turn the key on every thing looks fine, but when I try to start the engine everything goes dead. I just replaced the starter. Had the battery checked and have checked both ends of the battery cables to make sure they were tight also checked all fuses all ok. Any sugestions?

Hello;
It sounds as if the wire from the starter to the ignition switch is shorted out. You may also have a loose or broken connection at the main feed wire at the starter. Check the wires, and your underhood fuses as well. There are also circuit breakers that reset after a short time, put your finger on the outer shell of each circuit breaker and turn the key to start. If one is tripping, you will be able to feel it.
Hope this helps and rate me highly.
Thanks;

    Hello;

    Look under the hood in the engine compartment. There you will find a box with a bunch of wire connections to it, that is for the ABS. Next to it nearer the firewall is a smaller box around 4" square or so. Take the lid off and it allows you access to the maxi fuses and the circuit breakers and relays.

    The indide of the lid will have what each one functions. Also there are a couple of circuit breakers on the inside fuse block. It is usually located on the drivers sideof dash, you will find a panel to access this.

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks;

    Rich

    It shold be on the drivers side. They may also be along the firewall. A 96 I worked on was along the firewall and a 97 Suburban was on the drivers side fenderwell. They do like to hide them that's for sure.

    Hope this helps;

Won't start. No lights or power of any sort.

Check grounds. 3 main grounds are battery to engine, battery to body and engine to body. Sounds like yours is battery to body.

Key is stuck and everything is dead

Tried moving the steering wheel firmly in one direction or the other while (gently!) attempting to turn the key? Or look for a little lever that your knuckle sometimes hits when you do turn the key.

What would make a car sound like the battery is dead when trying to start (new battery)

Look at the negative battery cable and the engine to body bonding strap. These can melt just like the positive cable. The starter can be pulling too much current causing the whole problem.

Everything is dead

Hi eyansdaddy,
Sounds like a bad connection on the battery , check the earth cable on the battery and the one that earths the engine to the bodywork (at the bottom of the engine) if there worn or frayed it can stop the engine from starting. all the best Scott
