Check the alternator pulley it has a one way clutch in it. Remove the belt then get a screwdriver, use it to stop the alternator turning and turn the alternator pulley you should be able to turn it one direction but not the other. One thing I will say is the alternator pulley is a common failure.
Follow diagram on the radiator housing. Put belt on harmonic balancer first then work you way around each pulley according to the diagram. It is a tight fit but it can be done. Get the belt on all the pulleys except the alternator. Use a 3/8" breaker bar or socket wrench to pull up on the tensioner and slip the belt over the alternator pulley. Install with ribbed side of belt to ribbed pulley, smooth side of belt to a smooth pulley. Each type of truck will have a different routing pattern.
The mark II VW uses one large belt which goes around the crank, water pump and A/C compressor. Then, there is another smaller belt that goes around the crank and power steering pump (if equipped). Then, a smaller belt goes around the A/C compressor and around the alternator. If it's a diesel, there will also be a tensioner pulley for the alternator belt. If gasoline, there will be no pulley. To answer your question, there are 3 belts. One big one and two small ones.
REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

Loosen the driven accessory's pivot and mounting bolts.
Move the accessory toward or away from the engine until the tension is correct. You can use a wooden hammer handle, or broomstick, as a lever, but do not use anything metallic, such as a prybar.
Tighten the bolts and recheck the tension. If new belts have been installed, run the engine for a few minutes, then recheck and readjust as necessary.
It is better to have belts too loose than too tight, because overtight belts will lead to bearing failure, particularly in the water pump and alternator. However, loose belts place an extremely high impact load on the driven component due to the whipping action of the belt.
loosen the alternator and push the alternator to-wards the engine,put your new belt on ,fitting around the 3 pulleys once fitted look and see that the belt is in line.If your happy the belt is lined put a small bar between the engine and alternator and force the alternator out towards the front this should tension your belt tighten bolts on alternator.;at the longest point between two pullys in the middle of the belt move belt up and down with fingers if tension is right it should not move more than about 150ml,hope this helps you.adrian
the belt tensioner is on the lower left of the engine there is a 1/2 drive square hole on the right hand side pulley arm to release the tension its a pain to get at but you can, sometimes it is easier from the bottom
