Question about 1992 Toyota Previa

Transmission lever will not move from park with foot on brake

Started car this morning and went to move the car and I could not move the transmission lever out of park with foot on brake. Could the selenoid be defective and could I jump the selenoid to use the car until I get a new part? The car is a 1992 Toyota Previa

Check the switch on the brake pedal under the dash my be the switch is worn out

This morning it started fine but will not come out of gear and my airbag light is on. Someone said it was the fuse but I am not sure which fuse. Any ideas ?


I am mechanic I really need to no more make ect. but it could be battery or the ignition switch or ignition lock n key but like I said need more information this is a guess that I told you

Automatic Transmission Shift Lock Control System
The automatic transmission shift lock control is a safety device that prevents an inadvertent shift out of PARK when the ignition is ON. The driver must press the brake pedal before moving the shift lever out of the PARK position. The system consists of the following components:

The automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid.


?€¢
The automatic transmission shift lock control switch.


?€¢
The park/neutral position switch.

With the ignition in the ON position, battery positive voltage is supplied to the park/neutral position switch. When the transmission is in the PARK position the contacts in the park/neutral position switch are closed. This allows current to flow through the switch to the automatic transmission shift lock control switch. The circuit continues through the normally-closed switch to the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid. The automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid is permanently grounded. This energizes the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid, locking the shift linkage in the PARK position. When the driver presses the brake pedal the contacts in the automatic transmission shift lock control switch open, causing the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid to release. This allows the shift lever to move from the PARK position.
Park Lock Solenoid
The park lock solenoid is a safety device that prevents an inadvertent shift out of PARK when the key is in the OFF position. The key must be in the RUN position to release the park lock solenoid. The system consists of the park lock solenoid. With the ignition in the ON position, voltage is supplied to the park lock solenoid. The park lock solenoid energizes through a permanent ground unlocking the shift lever. With the ignition in the OFF or ACCY position the park lock solenoid de-energizes and locks the shift lever in the park position.
Shift Lever Does Not Move with Brake Pedal Depressed
DEFINITION: Transmission shift lever will not move out of the PARK position with the ignition ON and the brake pedal pressed.

Automatic Transmission Shift Lock Control System
The automatic transmission shift lock control system is a safety device that prevents an inadvertent shift out of PARK when the ignition is ON. The driver must press the brake pedal before moving the shift lever out of the PARK position. The system consists of the following components:

2003 aviator won't go into gear


When you say the vehicle "won't go into gear," do you mean you cannot move the lever out of PARK, or do you mean that when you move the lever out of PARK the transmission will not engage?
If the lever will not move out of PARK, check your BRAKE LIGHT fuse, your BRAKE LIGHT switch, and the SOLENOID at the shift mechanism.
If your lever moves out of PARK easily (too easily), it is possible that your shift linkage has broken or come loose.
If your lever moves out of PARK normally but the transmission does not engage, it's time to have the car towed to the transmission repair shop.

Shift lever blocked in position D ?


Could be the park neutral switch. It senses that foot is on the brake pedal so shifter can be moved.

Car wont start and rolls backwards even though it apears to be in park


Sounds like the shifter is stuck in reverse or drive since it will roll.
I would set the parking brake and have someone watch the shift lever on the transmission to see if it and the shifter inside is still connected.

My 2000 ford explora wont shift into park, i have to leave it in reverse to get the key out and put the Ebrake on and shut it off. when i put the car in drive it goes all the way to the number 1, can you...


The shift linkage is out of adjustment.

The cable bolt may be loose up at the column, the column itself may be loose enough to allow it to shift position as well.

Make sure column is securely mounted, If not- tighten the 4 bolts that hold it to the dash support so it is. if it is, crawl under driver's side and on the transmission is a bracket where the cable assembly comes into it, and from there a rod that attaches on the lever on the side of the transmission. Make sure the bracket is not damaged or cracked first- if it is, replace it. There is a captive clip to release on the wide part of the piece that the bracket holds, it does not come out fully, but it will release the cable housing so you can slide it to adjust it. With the column shift in Park position, note where the rod is at the transmission. Also make note if the bracket is in line with transmission. If bracket is in line, pull the lever rearward one notch/detent that you will feel engage the lever- this moves the transmission lever to neutral, then with firm pressure push lever forward so you feel 2 distinct notches/detents forward, the lever is now in park. Push locking clip back into position once you confirm the cable outer housing is squarely seated into bracket opening and is soundly clipped into the square opening of the bracket.

If the lever will not move to that second detent or you did not feel it, you will need to check by putting the column shift to first gear position, release the connection to the lever on the transmission just to verify location of lever, and verify the lever is indeed in first gear- the lever on the transmission will move no further- then count detents forward from the rear stop. you should end up in park, and you may hear the parking pawl engage the output shaft of transmission. move lever back to the rear to the stop, reattach the connection to the cable, put column in park, release the clip again and verify the lever is as far forward as it is going to move. Push clip into lock position.

Start Explorer, with foot on brake pedal, release the emergency/parking brake and see if the vehicle moves, or if it is truly in park. It should be in park.

If you encounter some dificulty with getting the column shift lever itself moved over to park- apply brake pedal to release the park interlock mechanism.

'00 Mercury Cougar Wont get out of Park. gear shifter is stuck


sounds like your brake/shift interlock solenoid is not releasing.
Your owner manual will tell you how to bypass in emergency.
Check your fuse first. fuse panel on instrument panel.

The selector lever lock can be moved mechanically out of position ”P" when for example the battery is disconnected or completely discharged.
Using a ball point pen or similar item as an unlocking lever, push forward and hold in position.

Move the selector lever out of position "P".

NOTE: If the selector lever is moved back to ”P" it is re-locked.

Gear lever stuck on '96 Toyota Lucida Estima


Automati Estimas have a safety device that locks the gear lever in 'park' until the brake pedal is pressed. Turn on the ignition and check that the brake lights are working, as the lock works on the same circuit. There may be a problem with the wiring to the lock mechanism

Mazda 92 B2200 Auto Pickup Will not shift from Park to Drive


I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that when you park the car, you pull up the hand (park) brake, shift from drive straight to park and then take your foot off the foot brake and the car moves slightly as it transfers the weight of the car from the foot brakes to, in your case, the transmission rather than the park brake.
Most people do.

When you do this, you're usually putting the weight of the car onto a small lever engaging notches on the drive shaft in the transmission, not the hand brake. The hand brake's designed to hold the car, the lever isn't, it's there just-in-case.

  • To fix the problem, you'll probably have to get this part in your transmission replaced. Fortunately it's the least significant part of the transmission so don't let them shaft you just because it's part of an automatic transmission.

  • To fix what caused the problem, you need your hand brake / park brake adjusted at the handle. You'll probably find that it adjusts at the other end (inside the rear wheel hubs) whenever you reverse.

For what it's worth, to avoid doing this damage to automatic transmissions whenever I'm stuck in one, I shift to Neutral then take my foot off the foot brake, then the car moves as it's weight shifts from the foot brake to the park brake which I often haven't pulled hard enough. Only when, in neutral, the car is stationary without the foot brake do I put it in park.
In Australia, it became illegal a couple of years ago to not be in the driver's seat when the engine's running. My understanding is that this was because, when the engine's running, sometimes older Automatic transmissions damaged in this way can shift out of Park. This is believed to be what has happened when you see unoccupied cars reversing in circles on "wildest police video" programs on TV. I also heard of some Borg-Warner automatic transmissions fitted to 80s model Ford Falcons (common in Australia), 70s model German saloons, which were particularly prone to Park failing to hold the car on a slope. I drove one for many years in a '75 BMW 528 in which some of it's other drivers developed the same habit.
Similarly, in my own car, I don't take my foot off the clutch until I've taken it off the brake without the car moving. Though the local Road & Traffic Authority regulation states "First gear if you're facing uphill, Reverse if you're facing downhill" I do the opposite because whatever damage might be done to panels will be cheaper than what would be done to the engine if the hand brake failed and it's not going to make much difference in slowing down a rolling car, especially with this one.
