Vitara freewheel hubs stuck in drive position . ( jx4u2 mod.)
I have just bought a 1600 vitara and found that the freewheel hubs are stuck in the drive position, i have taken off hubs and cleaned the lock/free leaver ,this now works fine but hub still remains in drive position all the time is it possible to strip hub and check operation without any special tools. ie i have all general tools puller etc.also do you now of a diagram of hub on the net
Re: vitara freewheel hubs stuck in drive position . (...
Yes you can strip them down but its not easy and you need to be mindfull that there are two large springs inside. You will prob find that there is a part inside that has disintergrated causing the hub to stay in drive. Not sure if you can buy the pars singally though.

the freewheeling hubs work when the axle is driving by transfereing the drive to the hubs from the axle. If you remove the hubs and the noise goes I suggest the problem is not in the hubs but in the cv joint just inside the hub. When you engage the F/Wheel hubs you are loading up these cv joints and if they are worn then that is when you will get the noise
Free wheeling hubs are installed on the hubs to engage the axle and lock to the hubs making them turn. When you disengage the hubs (freewheel) the axle is not driving the hub hence you have effective 2 wheel drive I suggest you check wheel bearings or make sure that they are in fact disengaged properly
it is unless hubs are defective or ingaged.Lift front end up and turn rotate wheels and se if u joint behind wheel is turning if it is you have a problem with hubs and while up in the air turn drive shaft by hand if it turns-- transfer case proubly ok go to hubs goo luck
do not attempt to replace by yourself unless you have a mech. background.. if you do check at some bone yards and see if you can get the part. and most ratios are standard. unless its been beefed up. or call a few garages and get estimates for the repair..good luck
