Question about 2003 Ford Expedition

Electrical issue is causing stereo, heater and instrument cluster

Recently, when starting the 2003 expedition, the stereo goes on and off and the rear defrost light flashes. also, today, the instrument cluster stopped working temporarily. I feel like there is a bad power relay switch or a short in the wiring. is there one pwer source that provides the power to all of the above, or is it provided THROUGH the instrument cluster? Dealer really doesn't act like they know and i dont want to begin replacing parts that arent the problem

Possible solutions include:

1. Relay or Circuit Breaker
2. Bad Ground or a broken Ground.

Please tell me if the instument cluster is working fine or is there lights that flash on that as well.

2005 Chevy classic. when starting, after started the instruments go dead for a second or two and come back. What could be causing this and is it a sign of a serious breakdown headed my way?

Could be problem with instrument cluster? Also, maybe an issues with voltage or ground for instrument cluster? I noticed one of the fuses for instrument cluster, is ignition feed, goes hot with the key on, ignition switch? Because the problem is intermittent, can be a pain to track. Because the problem is only for a second or two, not enough time to track? I did look for service bulletins for this issue, nothing caught my attention.

MY 1999 FORD EXPEDITION SHUT DOWN,I THINK IT IS MY ANTI THEFT, HOW DO I CUT IT OFF AND WHERE IS IT ON THE SUV?

The anti theft light will flash fast on the dash if it's activated. You simply lock & unlock the doors to disarm it.

Check your inertia switch to see if it is activated. Press the rest button. Se owner manual to rest.

The control functions are contained in the instrument cluster. This module carries out all of the PATS functions such as receiving the identification code from the encoded ignition key and controlling engine enable. The instrument cluster initiates the key interrogation sequence when the vehicle ignition switch is turned to RUN or START.
The PATS uses the PCM to enable or disable the engine. The instrument cluster communicates with the PCM over the SCP network in order to enable engine operation. The instrument cluster and the PCM use sophisticated messages in order to prevent a theft. The instrument cluster and the PCM share security data (when first installed together) that makes them a matched pair. After this security data sharing, these modules will not function in other vehicles. The shared PCM ID is remembered even if the battery is disconnected. The instrument cluster also stores the vehicle's key identification code even if the battery is disconnected. There are special diagnostic procedures outlined in this workshop manual that may be carried out if either a new instrument cluster or PCM needs to be installed.
All elements of PATS must be functional before the engine is allowed to start. If any of the components are not working correctly, the vehicle will not start.
PATS uses a visual theft indicator. This indicator will prove out for three seconds when the ignition switch is turned to RUN or START under normal operation. If there is a PATS problem, this indicator will either flash rapidly or glow steadily (for more than three seconds) when the ignition switch is turned to RUN or START. PATS also "blips" the theft indicator every two seconds at ignition OFF to act as a visual theft deterrent.
The PATS is not compatible with aftermarket remote start systems, which allow the vehicle to be started from outside the vehicle. These systems may reduce the vehicle security level, and also may cause no-start issues. Remote start systems must be removed before investigation of PATS-related no-start issues.

  • Ignition lock cylinder
  • Encoded ignition key (PATS key)
  • Use of non-encoded ignition key (key without the molded plastic head, non-PATS key)
  • Use of a non-programmed encoded ignition key

    • Fuse 2 (5A)

1996 Yukon Electrical issue My Yukon dash lights (engine, air bag etc) flicker on and off whenever they feel like it..Aftermarket stereo goes off at the same time

Sounds like a loose fuse, or bad ground in the wiring. Its pretty common that one fuse controls most of the internal electric components.

Instrument cluster not working but jeep runs fine

Often the whole instrument cluster runs off of the same fuse. Did it just recently stop working? If so, has there been any work done recently to the stereo or any of the dash controls?

A fuse blowing just because it's worn out, or old, is not very common. Most fuses are damaged from electrical work being done and someone accidently touches something that sends an electrical surge which blows the fuse.

You should be able to remove the fuse cover, inside the car on the driver's side. When you remove the cover most have a fuse diagram on the inside of the cover.

I hope this helps.

2003 Tahoe, speedometer varies. Sometimes it works fine, sometimes it registers slow and other time registers fast

Hello,

This is a very common issue with the 03-06 Tahoe instrument clusters and is caused by failing gauge motors inside the cluster. Check this page for more details on how to get it fixed - Tahoe instrument cluster repair

Thanks

Replace spedometer cable 2003 gmc yukon xl

There is no speedometer cable on the 2003 Yukon, if there is no transmission issues like shifting problem. Your instrument cluster has gone bad, to pinpoint. Your stepper motor to your speedometer gauge has failed and needs to be replaced. You can do a search on Ebay for the stepper motor for around $10.00 which is better then the $400.00 cost of another instrument cluster.
There was a TSB on the replacement of the instrument cluster for your Yukon free of charge. The only cost to you is the labor charge unless your willing to do the job your self. Just go to the Gm Dealer and give them this TSB Number: # 07187C: Special Coverage Adjustment - Instrument Panel Cluster Gauge Needle Function - (Mar 20, 2009)

Some customers of all 2003-2004 model year and certain U.S. 2005 model year Cadillac Escalade, Escalade ESV, and Escalade EXT; Chevrolet Avalanche, Silverado, Suburban, and Tahoe; and GMC Sierra, Yukon, and Yukon XL vehicles have reported that one or more of the instrument panel (IP) cluster gauges stick, flutter, or become inoperative. This may cause inaccurate readings, including the speedometer and fuel gauge. Special Coverage Adjustment This special coverage covers the condition described above for a period of 7 years or 70,000 miles (110,000 km), whichever occurs first, from the date the vehicle was originally placed in service, regardless of ownership.
Dealers are to replace the instrument panel cluster after the condition has been verified. The repairs will be made at no charge to the customer.

For verified failures between 70,001 miles (110,001 km) and 80,000 miles (130,000 km) on U.S. vehicles, dealers are to provide the customer with an instrument panel cluster (IPC) only. Any additional costs, including labor to replace the instrument panel cluster, will be the responsibility of the customer. Dealers are responsible for the return of the customer's IPC back to the Electronic Service Center

Thank you for using fixya and good luck.

When I turn the key on in my 99 Expedition Guages go to maximum

probably when heater core replaced instrument cluster was damaged. check for broken wires or loose connections. on newer vehicles sometimes if you disconnect the instrument cluster you have to reprogram it with a scan tool for the car to recognize it.
