Question about 1986 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme

1 Answer

Trans doesnt like reverse

86 cutlass supreme (rwd) 3.8v6/3 spd auto (metric trans)
when shifting into reverse, it doesnt want to go into will eventually, but not always. the idle drops as if its in gear but no engagement. sometimes there is an audible hiss when this happens (vacuum?).the car has 61,000 original kms. the fluid doesnt smell burnt but betting its the original fluid based on the low milage. the car was "lil ole lady" owned so im ruling out abuse. im thinking valve body... any thoughts? answers? suggestions? (all foward gears work perfectly)

That is a good trans - damn near bullet proof, change the fluid and filter and replace it with B&M trick shift or ((Hurst Hot Shift fluid)) these fluids preserve the bands and gives firm shifts instead of the lazy slip into gears , you will notice a really big difference in the efficiency of the trans and nice shifts as well - only need to change whats in thew pan, also while you are under there check your linkage because sometimes it needs re adjusted (adjust on the thing that is a round cylindrical thing with a bolt on the side - your shift rod goes through this) have a partner get in ((after)) you loosen the bolt and have them put the needle on the dash centered on the (P) - retighten

also - look for vaccum leaks on the drivers side valve cover and underneath on the passenger side of trans - the vaccuum line that goes into the modulator sometimes rots - follow the steel line up to the carb and check the vaccuum line there too

Why do it take my 1986 cutlass so long to change.

What do you want it to change into? If you are saying the trans doesn't shift into the next gear soon enough, could be vacuum leak, dirty filter in trans, someone put a different governor in trans. Most likely vacuum leak. Use gauge to test while driving.

No high gear in 3 speed auto trans in 98 caravan

You must have a 3.0L engine to have a 670T 3 spd trans, if so, with high mileage trans, the diff bearings will start to wear out under torque and send fillings into the governor mounted on the tranfer shaft, giving you all kinds of shifting problems, also worn front clutch disc pack and seals will do it, also total failure of the front clutch will give you no reverse, 3rd gear needs front and rear clutch to work together, pull the pan off and check for fillings and material, if lots , pull the trans for overhaul. need more info, just ask RDJRP.

Trans doesnt like going into reverse

look for a vacumn leak ??if not then put a litre of diesel into transmission and drive it around for an hour then drain and refill ,might not work but sometimes it does on older boxes with all this flash computer stuff on them

1995 cutlass supreme transmission

It physically will fit and bolt up,but there are many different ratio, and drive and driven sprocket tooth counts, different final drive ratios, all monitored by the computer with electronic speed sensors. If the trans from the 95 has a different ratio than the 93,the computer will set gear ratio error codes, and possibly put the trans in a failsafe mode, stuck in 2nd or 3rd gear.On the transmission case, down by where the passenger side axle would go in,is a thin metallic tag, maybe 2"x 3",and it has bar codes, and also a series of numbers and letters. The numbers and letters, large cap,are the final drive gear ratio code. They should match on the two transmissions in question.

Transmission problem..

The transmissions in these cars (4T60E) were NIGHTMARES!!!!!! Do yourself a favor to avoid continuous problems. Replace it with a trusted transmission dealer> I can't say who not to take it to but it rymes with slamco (haha)
other problems that will occur, even if you replace the ATP
1. in winter time when you shift to drive it hesitates or feels like it is only partially in gear (fluid will be full when you check it)
2. car shudders in overdrive.
3. car makes a destinct "klunking" noise while in park at a slightly higher RPM. almost sounds like something is loose in the motor.
so like i said get it replaced, I have been though 3 of these since my car was new the car has 263K on it now and i am about to replace it again (argh). The only reason I am is because it is a convertible in nearly mint shape,,
OH by the way "Trans X" is a GREAT product to prolong the replacement adventure. Local auto parts stores have it by that name.
