Question about Volkswagen Golf

1 Answer

We just had my daughters 2004 Golf serviced at Maus VW in Orlando Florida. I asked them to check the brakes because they were jerking. The service manager Alexi said we needed new rotors and pads. My daughter brought the car home but when she went to school today, she lost almost all braking capability. It appears there is no fluid in the reservoir. Additionally, we had a battery replaced and it already has boiling evidence (battery acid dust). What happened? The car is now in the garage. We are thinking about having it towed. I really would like to find another repair service also.

SOUNDS LIKE YOU HAVE A LEAK OR THE PADS ARE WORN OUT TO THE MAX, ALSO YOUR GARAGE SOUNDS VERY BAD, ROTORS DONT NEED TO BE CHANGED THAT OFTEN, THOU RECOMMEDED TO BE CHANGED EVERY 3 TO 4 SETS OF PADS, DUST ON THE BATTERY IS NOT UNCOMMON CAN BE LACK OF USE, OR JUST BAD CONECTIONS, AS THIS CAUSES THE ALTENATOR TO UVER CHARGE THE BATTERY CLEAN ALL CONNECTIONS TO STARTER AND CHARGER AND GREASE WHEN FITTING

2004 Golf 2.0FSI auto transmission, 77,000 kms, dealer serviced since new, one owner (my wife). Auto trans is slipping and not selecting gears/keeping gears properly. Is this a common problem? VW dealer...

Check fluid level first to ensure that there is enough hydraulic pressure for brake bands and clutches to engage fully. Have the engine running in 'park' and remove the transmission fluid dip stick. Check level, colour and smell: it should be pink/red with no hint of any burnt aroma. If it is tinged brown this is due to clutch surface material wearing away. The acrid over cooked smell will arise if the brake bands are continuously slipping and generating heat. If the level looks low top with extra fluid via the transmission dipstick tube (do not confuse this with the gearbox oil dipstick) VW is a popular make and there will be auto transmission specialists out there with extensive knowledge. It would be no harm phoning around to ask for them to give it an assessment and then to ask the cost of adjustment, overhaul, repair or replacement.

Cambelt or chain

Your 2005 VW Golf has a timing belt and not a chain.
Most importantly, your VW has what's called an interference engine.
If th eblt breaks, it will allow the valve to collide with the pistons and you will have major damage.

Be very careful to replace the belt on or before the manufacturer's recommended replacement interval.

VW originally recommended 60k miles or 5 years but that in 2004 or 2005 they changed that to 40k miles or 3 years after seeing belts (and therefore pistons and valves) go pop after about 45k.
