The engine was making a sound kinda like air escaping from the engine...and was running last night, but would not start this morning. Bought the car a month ago and the previous owner said they had just replaced the timing belt...

It's my daughter's car. She said it was making noise last night and would act like it was going to stall out when she stopped. Appreciate your help...checking spark plugs and calling previous owner to detail on timing belt...although, I don't think that is the problem.

hey Mark...we pulled the spark plugs and the number two cyclinder plug has oil at the base of the insulator and around the top of the nut.

no not an imposter...working from a different computer last night. Sorry...i'm new to this website. I'm in over my head and I'm throwing in the towel and calling the tow truck...truly appreciate your help!

Sounds like a badly blown head gasket or cylinder head

If the timing belt is broken, chances are you would hear the pistons banging into the open valves as the engine turned over (broken timing belt means cam is not turning, and some valves will be open.).

Please reply what led up to the engine not starting, from the last time that the engine ran.

Wow, this could be a can of worms.

"Sounds like air escaping from the engine" could be a spark plug blew out, or just normal compression, but it's been years since you could hear normal compression because of all the stuff they mount around the engine.

Was it running OK when you turned it off last night? No weird sounds or anything before turning it off?

Timing belt could have slipped a cog or two, or may not have been aligned/timed properly when repairs were made. Was the work warrantied, and was the warranty transferable?

Anything else come to mind which could provide a glimpse of any other symptoms?

Well, I'll help as I can, and with two driving daughters myself, I understand the issues of getting a phone call that says "My car won't start". Never enough information, and never the right details.

Let me know, and if you don't mind, bump my rating to a FixYa, since this one is hard to diagnose over the computer without being there, as you are experiencing with talking to your daughter by phone. Like I said, I will be happy to continue to work with you once you have more information.

    To Guest -

If the oil is on the outside of the plug, then you need to find where
it came from. Chances are slim it came from inside the motor.

If the plug was fowled with oil, uh, I hate to be the bearer of bad
news, but you may have a ring, valve seal, or other similar problem.

Reply back and I'll try to help (but would prefer you login in under a user name, and new topic posting in order to avoid confusion, unless your the original poster in disguise.).

    That's what I thought.

    Sorry I couldn't give you a final answer, but with limited info . . . . .

Thanks for the FixYa! Let me know what fixes it.

i would check and see if spark pluges are firing. you can take one out and plug into spark plug wire then let the bottom of the plug sit on engine and get someone to try to start while you look at the plug to see if there is any fire. if you have no fire or fuel it would be the crankshaft sencer. it could be the timing belt but the motor would sound different turning over then it used to.

2003 Mitsubshi Eclipse RS 4 cylynder wont fire up

You'll have to figure out if it is a fuel or ignition problem.
Is the check engine light on ? Have you checked for trouble codes ?
It could be a relay, the ignition module, coil, fuel pump, or a list of other things.

its quite possible that the timing belt broke. if broke the camshaft will not turn, and therefore no start of engine.

The timing belt broke on my 95 eclipse gs how can i fix it??

I believe that you have what is called an 'interference engine', that means that if the timing belt breaks, the valves hit the pistons, and basically, the engine is junk at that point, as it would cost more to attempt to fix than to purchase a used or rebuilt engine.

My 1999 Eclipse gs engine light came on, DTC P1390.

P1390 - Timing belt skipped one tooth or more.

the engine is an interference engine so if the timing belt skipped, it should be fixed before starting the engine again. otherwise you run the risk of bend/break valves from piston to valve contact
