Question about 2003 Hummer H2

9 Answers

Hummer H2 will not start.

I have a 2003 Hummer H2 6.0L with 72,000 Miles
VIN-5GRGN23U73H117752
I was idling in a long line at a carwash and my engine shutoff. When I attempted to restart, it would not.
I put the gear in park to restart, and when it failed to start I shift to neutral, tried and failed.
I did notice two things, at the carwash, one I may have run out of gas because my low fuel light was on and the tank looked empty by the gauge. I put a gallon of gas in with a can but it still failed to start.
I also observed that has I moved the gear shift the lighted bar that appears normally below each gear is no longer visible . It is the indicator for the PRNDL321 Display.
I had the truck towed home and tried a couple of things, but I am not a mechanic and it is not going well.
I tried several things at home including two scan tools that would not read my vehicle.
Starter relay does click when I turn the key to start.
Solenoid does not click when I turn the key to start.
The battery is new and at full charge.
The headlights go out when I turn the key to start, but I believe that’s normal.
So far I have put 15 gallons in the tank and tried that. Low fuel light still on.
I tried disconnecting the battery for an hour and reconnecting it.
I observed all the lights on my display and the lighted bar to indicate what gear is selected is the only thing missing from the display.
The gear does change in the transmission properly and does coincide with my console shift mechanism. Park is mechanically Park, and Neutral is mechanically Neutral.
9. I tried two types of scan tools, and while they did power up when connected, both
would give the same message, (Tool cannot communicate with the vehicle.
Check wiring).
The Scan Tools I tried were the INNOVA and Actron both OBD2
Maybe you can help me fix this without a Scan Tool, but if not please advise on proper tool. I have the manufacturers shop manual for my vehicle.
HELP!!!

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

An alternate possibility is that the vehicle's alarm/security/immobilizer acting up. Have you tried engaging the alarm, deliberately trigger it to go off and then disengage it or bypass the alarm entirely?

Or if so equipped, the valet switch.

Would appreciate updates on any developments. Good luck and thank you for using FixYa.

A few steps to troubleshoot why your engine does not crank:

When you turn the key to start, you may hear a single click or nothing at all, or you may hear a rapid series of clicks, like a woodpecker, or you may hear the cranking sound, but it goes very slowly.

The most common cause for any of these is either a weak or dead battery, or a dirty or corroded connection to the battery. Before you go any further, turn your interior light on, then try to start the car.

If the light is dim or goes dim when you turn the key to start, then Click here to find out what to do when you have a dead battery.

If the interior light is bright when you turn it on and doesn't change when you turn the key to start, the battery is probably ok. This condition can be caused by the following: (this list is sorted from most likely to least likely)

You do not have the transmission selector in park or neutral on an automatic transmission vehicle or there is a problem with the neutral safety switch. Try starting again with the transmission selector in Neutral.

There is a problem with the ignition switch or connecting wiring.

There is a problem with the starter motor or starter solenoid.

Your starter solenoid may be bad - or the starter relay has failed.

Check/replace the relay first. (Consult your owners manual as to the location)

If it is new/good, check for 12V at the starter solenoid.

Since the CEL is not coming on, the solenoid has probably failed - however that would not cause the car the vehicle to die while idling.

Since the H2 was out of gas, the solenoid was probably engaged longer than normal on the re-start attempt(s) and has likely failed.

Thank you for using FixYa - a FixYa rating is appreciated!!

Welcome to Fixya! Look under the Hood and Locate the Fuse Relay Box. Inside this Box there will be a Relay for the Starter and 1 for the Fuel Pump. Replace these Relays. There is also a Relay for the Crank Sensor, Replace this one as Well. Let me know what you have after this. If we need to go Further I can help you out. Please Rate My Response! Thanks!

If the car stopped after fuel was emptied, then it is likely that the fuel lines had been clogged with debris from the fuel tank.

Chck if fuel is getting regularly to the engine.

If it does not cranc and you only hear a click sound, then check first the battery, eventually replace battery to ensure that is not the problem.

If you still get same problem with a new fully charged battery, then it is either the ignition cylinder or the start motor, replace either one.

When you were trying to scan with the scan tool, did you have the ignition key on? Were you using the correct cable?
The warning you gave comes up when the scan tool is connected either with the wrong cable, or the key is not on (not start position, just run position.).

When you say the engine will not start, are you saying it will not turn over, or it turns over and will not start? If it turns over and will not start, and you ran it out of gas, you may have an air bubble in the fuel rail on top of the engine. You will find a bleeder on both fuel rails that need to be depressed to allow any air to bleed (same thing happened to me when the fuel pump went out on my '01 Tahoe).

Reply what your symptoms are as asked above, and I will help further.

My Hummer H2 2003 model had a problem starting when its warm. Like when I start it in the morning, its normal, but after driving it for a few minutes and the engine is warm, I had difficulty starting

I had this same problem with my 2003 H2, my mechanic found that the fuel diaphragm was cracked and this was allowing my truck to flood. If it was a cold start, the extra fuel would evaporate and it would start fine. It actually got to the point where I would stall at a stop light or stop sign at idle. The part was is the neighborhood of $175.00 and about 1 hour of labor to install.
