2003 Chevy Silverado Transfer Case

I have a 2003 Chevy Silverado 1500, it has started to make a clicking noise under the hood, at first we thought that it was the unverisal joint, but after having a mechinac look at it he said it was the transfer case. Would it be better to find a new transfer case or rebuild the current one.

Same problem here. It started as a dull thudding heard mostly when at very low speed and stopping. Thought it was brakes first. Not it. Then thought it was bad wheel bearing. Not it. The four wheel drive works fine in all ratios but the sound has gotten much worse now. If you jack the truck up and take the weight off the wheels and spin them, there is no apparent noise. There has to be a load on front end for it to make the noise. Which makes it hard to pin point when there has to be weight on it AND moving at the same time. Other than driving around in a parking lot and having a buddy run along beside to find the sound, its been hard to pinpoint. I have found that the noise is the worst when in 2WD. When in any 4WD ratios the noise is gone. Which leads me to believe its something with the joints forward of the transfer case beouase the sound is equal from behind both front tires.

Well make sure it is the tranfercase because if it was u wouldent have 4wd and u wouldent be able to drive it but it would be cheper to rebuild it but make sure first because some people are just out for your money good luck

A lot of times its actually the transfer case motor making noise. And if the noise is in the actual case it doesnt necessarily mean your 4X4 isnt working. Can also be the splines in the driveshaft going into the case, but most of the time it is the transfer case

I have a 1999 chevy silverado Z71 1500 5.3. It makes loud grinding and poping noises when I put it in gear how do I know if its the transmission or the transfer case?

the transfer case only engages when in 4wd. check the universal joint, it connects from the drive shaft to the rear differential. it may need grease or to be replaced.

BnOur 2001 Chevy Silverado is stuck in low lock 4 wheel drive and maximum speed is 8 mph. Does the computer have to be reset or is there something else we can do. Right in the middle of hauling brush...

The problem could be a number of things from the dash switch to the encoder motor on the transfer case. Try turning the truck off for a few seconds, then turn it on - don't start it, try switching it to 4wd hi. you shoul'd hear the transfer case motor trying to switch gears., if you don't hear that then check the fuse under the hood for that system. If the fuse is good, then crawl under and see if you damaged the wires to the transfer case.
Good luck.

Noise in Reverse

Transfer case would only be if you are in 4 wheel drive. this sounds like a rear end or u joint issues. Get under the truck and grab the drive line, if you are able to turn it more then a 1/4 inch each way bad u joints. If not then check the rear end.

Transfer case clunk 2000 chevy silverado 1500 4x4

One thing to check, which is often the culprit in these situations is the U-joints. With the truck off, crawl under the vehicle and grab hold of the shaft leading into as well as the shaft going out of your transfer case, If htere is a lot of "slop in it, chance are it is in need of repair. Also I would check the oil level in the transfer case, in an attempt not to challenge you intelligence, there should be a plug located in the lower part about 2 inches from the bottom or so. it usually has a square hole that a 1/2" ratchet fits into. Pull the plug, and stick your pinky into the hole, you should be able to feel the lubricant just below the hole, if not it is in dire need of a filling. also check for metallic remnants in the fluid. this is a sign that things are not as they should be. In that case contact a repairman for a more thorough look.
