Question about 1998 Chevrolet Cavalier

Starter went out wich somehow caused the ignition to go out

I was driving my car, all of a sudden a banging sound started comming from under neath my car. So i pulled over, looked under the hood a wire was sparking from my starter cylinoid so i turned off my car when i tried to start it back up it wouldn't start.

I assumed it was the starter so i went and bought a brand new starter had that put on, and now when i turn the key over it wont try to start at all, could it be b/c of the ignition went out in it. Although i just bought a new transmittion about 5 months ago.

I tried cross wiring it by hooking up some wire from the batterry to the starter but that didnt work.

So know im stuck

I would really appreciate and help at all b/c i am puzzled.
THANKS.

its a brownish color, it looks good to me, i just got an oil change 2 weeks agol......... when i turn over the key nothing comes on except for my radio and my lights on the dash

The motor or starter doesnt try to crank up or nothing

and when i cross wired it the starter would act as if its trying to start, but the car doesnt.

No the motor just stays there not trying to do nothing, the starter tries, but not the motor.

good chance that motor is seized ... if you know how... try and turn it by hand

That banging noise may have been the motor failing... first check the oil and let me know what colour it is... also by turning over what i mean is when you attempt to start it... does the motor spin with the starter ?

My mother just had a problem similar to this on her cavalier and it turned out to be a module unplugged underneath the car.

My car turns off while driving ? now it won't start

Let us assume you have not run out of fuel and the fuel gauge is ok.

Normally cars do not stop suddenly if battery is the issue. Could be the alternator but you have installed a new battery. The fuel system seems to be the problem. Could be blocked fuel pump.

All of the sudden my Durango wont start. The starter engages, it just sounds like its not getting any Gas to where it needs to go to get It to fire up. We tried tapping on the starter to see if thAt wOuLD...

Don't tap on the starter-it is engaging. Tap on the bottom of the gas tank-if your fuel pump is failing, sometimes you can get it to work a time or two by banging on the gas tank. If it works, you will need a new fuel pump.

You should hear the pump come on for about 2 seconds, by turning the key to on. It should come on to pressurize the system. If you don't hear it buzz on for a short time with key on, you will need to check out the pump.
Sudden no starts like yours are usually gas or ignition related. Check for gas and check for spark.

Trying to change a stater cant find the bolts on top

the top bolts come in from the rear of the bell housing. They these bolts mount both the bell housing to the block and the starter motor to the block. Under neath just line up wich mount bolts are close to the starter and undo them, possibly 2 that hold them. once remove starter should fall straight into your hand

Location of the starter 1989 Corolla wagon engine whizzing when attempting to start and want to bang starter at least

The starter is located on the backside of the engine (firewall side) on the drivers side, from symptom described it sounds like a bad starter drive. The starter needs to be removed, disassembled and the drive replaced. I have found that banging the starter usually only works when the starter has very worn brushes that builds a pile of carbon in the bottom of the starter causing a short and banging the starter sometimes disrupts that unwanted ground path or the brushes are so worn they don't contact the armature properly to make good contact after the armature stops spinning from it's last start. Some times the shock of banging the starter will shift the brushes enough to allow it to start the car.

Starter suddenly stopped working. Loud bang when

It's most likely a timing problem, you may try too adjust it yourself; Loosen set screw on distributor and get a timing light. there also a chance it jumped a timing gear when you heard the loud bang..

Truck wont turn over when trying to start it up,

Sounds like a fuel pump, I would have a shop check it out. Mine did the same thing when the fuel pump went out on my 01 Sierra. Good Luck

Replaced starter on a 1991 Cadillac DeVille still won't start

Is this possible ? Banging on the starter surely jarred either the solenoidm the starter brushes or armature. I've done that a 1000 X with poitive results, and in the end overhauled or replaced the starter. Now you say this has been going on for 2 mos or so, could there NOW be SOMETHING ELSE ( new problem ) like the battery /starter connections, ignition switch, etc causing no power to the starter , Hoping all re-connections are good.
