If this happened all of a sudden, It sounds like a Vacuum leak. I would inspect the vacuum hoses for brakes or cracks. Is the Rpm too high to test drive and see how the vehicle is running?

Have you checked throttle cable return. Might have caught and is holding wide open.

I have a 1996 sunfire that all of the sudden wont accelerate , rpm's stay down , check engine light on and has for some time smelled like gas after running

as long as light is on, go to auto-zone etc they will scan for free. no sense in guessing, the OBD-2 scanner will give you a po code, so you know what area to start and fix it.

believe it or not, the floormat on my 2000 Sunfire will sometimes slip forward and hold the clutch pedal down against the floor. It truly feels like a mechanical problem, but simply pull the floormat away and the pedal pops right back up!

Give me the year make and model, engine size and standard or auto trans? Sound like you have a fuel issue to me. Perhaps a faulty fuel injector(S). Let me know the specs...cheers!
