Question about 1996 Mercury Cougar XR7

1 Answer

Speed Sensor. I have a 96 cougar. The speed sensor has gone out so the mechanic said. He put a new one in so he said. It lasted two months. I put two more in and they don't work either. The o/d light is flashing and the check engine light is on. The speedometer does not work. I would like to know what might be the problem. I have done all I know to do. Thanks,

Ok one major question! Will changing the tcc solenoid in my 01 cougar fix the o/d flashing and make the car go forward when I try to drive it?

No. replacing the TCC or the OSS, will not make the transmission work. You can unplug these transmissions and they will still work, less OD. Sounds like you may have stripped the torque converter oil pump gear. Common in these older Mercury/Fords.

Where is the speed sensor located on a 99 mercury cougar

go under the car, go to the center of the firewall, look up, you can not see the sensor very well, if you buy the new one so you will know what you are looking for.

I need to find out where the output speed sensor goes or 96 dodge grand caravan

if your standing in front of the car looking down at the transmission, the output speed sensor will be on the right (drivers) side of the front of the transmission. The sensor in the middle of the trans cooler lines is the input speed sensor. The output speed sensor looks identical to that one. It is easier to access/change it from under the car. You will need a 1' socket to remove and install the new one.

Trany want shift takes off in high speedodemeter dont work what do i do want shift up or down

Hard to understand your English, but sounds like you have a 'speed sensor' issue. They are used by the transmission and speedometer to determine when to shift and display the speed.

A dealer/mechanic can diagnose what sensor needs replaced.

The trick is to snake your arm down the back, ajacent to the maifold pipe, and unplug the wiring harness. Should be a 10mm socket to unscrew the bolt that holds the sensor in place. Once the screw was out it was easy to pull the sensor out and rush to Auto Zone and get a new one. Reverse the process in putting the sensor in.

1996 thunderbird 4 6 power brakes and power steering fades in and out while driving"

This may be your problem.

FORD: 1994-96 THUNDERBIRD LINCOLN-MERCURY: 1994-96 COUGAR ISSUE: Steering efforts at low speeds may intermittently increase to the heavier for highway setting on some vehicles. This is due to electrical "noise" from the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) being picked up by the Electronic Variable Orifice (EVO) module. The EVO module then interprets this as an increase in vehicle speed and reduces the steering assistance to the heavier for highway level.
ACTION: Replace the EVO module with a new module that has improved filtering for electrical noise. Refer to the following Service Procedure for details.
SERVICE PROCEDURE Replace EVO module (F6SZ-3F712-BB). Locations are as follows:
  • On 1994-95 vehicles, the EVO module is located under the package tray in the trunk.
  • On 1996 vehicles, the EVO is located under the heater blower case on the passenger side.
Refer to Section 11-02 of the appropriate year Thunderbird/Cougar Service Manual for additional diagnosis and repair information.

PART NUMBER PART NAME F6SZ-3F712-BB Electronic Variable Orifice Module OTHER APPLICABLE ARTICLES: NONE
WARRANTY STATUS: Eligible Under The Provisions Of Bumper To Bumper Warranty Coverage
OPERATION DESCRIPTION TIME 960402A Replace Electronic Variable Orifice (EVO) Module - 1994-95 Thunderbird/Cougar 0.5 Hr. 960402B Replace Electronic Variable Orifice (EVO) Module - 1996 Thunderbird/Cougar 0.3 Hr.
