Question about 1995 Geo Prizm

1995 geo prizm lsi starting problems.

This car has been great to me so far. Recently I had a starting problem that was fixed by replacing the igniter. In the process I also replaced the spark plugs, plug wires, the rotor, the cap and the fuel filter. It stopped stalling out, but since then there has been an occasional "puttering" noise accompanied by a brief loss of horsepower. It happens sparingly, sometimes only once or twice on a trip to a continuous puttering. It makes me think there is a problem with one or more of the pistons but I'm not sure. Others have told me it could be a transmission problem. I used a can of BG 44k the other day and it seemed to improve the performance slightly.

There is a long list of possible causes, You would have to check into each individual one.

1.) Failing fuel pump.
2.) Bad valve seat/seal
3.) Sticking valve
4.) Timing is off, Reset timing to 10* BTDC
5.) Clogged fuel injector(s)
6.) Your new ignition coil (as im assuming thats what you meant by "Igniter") may be faulty.
7.) Wiring to the new ignition coil may be faulty
8.) Spark plug wires not firmly in place.
9.) Faulty Distributor pickup coil and/or wiring harness/wiring.

The list goes on and on, Some are more likely then others. Personally, from experience (having owned 4 95 geo prizms myself in my lifetime) i would go with the clogged injectors, Fuel pump, and distributor pickup/wiring in that order. Those engines last quite a long time when properly cared for, An internal engine problem (Although possible) is unlikely in my opinion.

(the ignition wire is hot all the time due to bad igntion switch ,bad wires to same or someone has hacked the wiring )

My 1995 geo prizm lsi engine light came on it runs fine however it failed emmisions testing because nO was twice the limit what could it be


Hi:
You need to find out what is causing the check engine light, to go any further in fixing you car. Most likely you have a bad sensor, but you should go to a local auto parts store, as most of them, like auto zone, will scan your car for free and tell you what part is most likely bad. a little luck and you will get a cheap fix and pass emissions!

turns over and crank are the same thing,
so you are saying it does crank over but no start,right?
you need to determine if you have at least 50psi of fuel pressure in fuel rail at reed valve.

check neutral safety switch...usually mounted on gear selector...also check shift linkage for correct adjustment

1995 Geo Prizm starts, but stalls when put into drive.


We finally took it to a mechanic and it turned out the ignition coil was bad. Replaced it and the spark plugs and all is well now.

Yes a harmanic balancer from tha corolla is the same thing. I had to do the same thing with my 95 geo. It works out to be a lot cheaper buying for a toyota than a geo.
