Question about 2000 Chevrolet S-10

Vacuum line on top of my 4l60

Hi,

I have a 2000 Chevy S10 2 wheel drive with the 4L60 tranny. I recently installed a different tranny shipped to me from a junk yard. The tranny came to me with all connections attached but cut. I was able to remove all old connections and replace with the connections from my S10. I did notice a what looked like a either a blow by line or a vacuum line on the top of the reansmission.

Unfortunately, I did not pull the old tranny, so I do not know what this line on the top of the tranny is for, nor can I find any loose lines from ny S10.

Any ideas as to what this line is for?

Thanks for your help.
Rick

Some trannys have a hard line that comes out on top of trans. all your old 350's and 400 turbos had them, thats just a breather tube for trans., it don't hook to anything. just a breather. i believe thats what your talking about.

What tranny does a 87 Suburban with a 5.0L have?

Automatic three speed 3L80 OR 3L80-HD or a four speed 4L60, 4L60-E or 4L80-E. You can have the VIN # checked at a Chevy/GM dealer to be sure which one it is. There are also numbers (may be on a nameplate/tag) on the trans, but difficult to see when in the vehicle.

It should fit, just make sure you have the right year 4L60E and change the boost valve rating. Too low of a boost valve will cause you to burn up your transmission when it's making gear changes a good boost valve for your Silverado is a 0.490" or a 0.500" boost valve like the ones in a Corvette or Camaro to take the extra stress of HP and tq the 5.7 has above the 4.3 liter engine.
The key distinction of the Later 4L60-E (1997-2006) from the Early 4L60-E (1992-1997) is the six-bolt "hex" rear output or tailhousing / adapter pattern. The previous versions featured a four-bolt square bolt pattern at the adapter or tail-housing. Additionally, the removeable bellhousing is also another distinguishing feature.
Two-wheel-drive versions have tailhousings and typically a longer output shafts than four-wheel-drive versions, which have various adapter assemblies and a shorter output shaft. 4L60-E is found in nearly every GM rear-wheel-drive application, including the C/K Truck, Sonoma, Jimmy, Tahoe, Yukon, Astro, Safari, Suburban, Bravada, Firebird, Camaro and Corvette.
The 4L60E is now concurrently produced along with its strengthened progenitors; the 4L65-E and the 4L70-E. They share most components and improvements together. The 4L65-E was introduced in 2001 as an HD version of the 4L60-E. It has a stronger planetary and a strength-improved output shaft.
4L70-E transmission is a further improvement still, and share most components. However, these versions have strengthened and improved components for the significant power outputs of GM's impressive line of Gen III + engines.
Good luck and you have a 4L60E transmission, thank you for using Fixya

no vacuum modulator in this trans, have you run the codes? u may just have a shift solenoid or a trans connector problem. see method of checking codes at link below.

Will a 4L60 work in a 1995 Chevy Blazer that has a 4L60e in it?

It will not work. 4L60E is computer controlled,4L60 is controlled by cable for throttle pressure,it will bolt up but problems will be many.

Speedo stopped working and tranny wont shift out of first!

I will try and clear up any confusion about the different model designations. The trans was first introduced as the Turbo Hydramatic 700 r 4.Later in the evolution of that family,it had improvements made on it by the factory engineers, and they redesignated it the 4L60 model. The 700/4L60 uses a throttle valve cable as a mechanical indication of the throttle position....to the trans. The TV cable regulates mainline hydraulic pressure inside the transmission. This model also uses a governor as a road speed mechanism. It is responsible for the TIMING of the upshifts, and is responsible for the trans being in first (low) gear from a standing start. In 1993,the 4L60E was introduced to the lineup.Same trans as the 700/4L60,but now it is totally electronic, and totally controlled by the PCM (Powertrain Control Module) based on electrical inputs/outputs from the trans, throttle position sensor, road speed, etc. The engineers took the 700/4L60 and did away with the governor and TV cable, made it totally electronic.Early 700's had a mechanically driven speedometer, while the later 4L60's and E's had an electronic speedometer.1993 was a transition year.I have seen both, the 4L60 and the 4L60E in 1993 model trucks,it depends on the month of the manufacture of the vehicle.Your truck could have either,or.The way to visually identify the difference is........on the driver side, the 700/4L60 trans case will have a round, black, governor cover, about 3 or 4 inches in diameter. The 4L60E case does not.The 700/4L60 also has the TV cable mounted on the passenger side of the trans case, and it routes up to the throttle body/gas pedal/accelerator linkage. The 4L60E does not.Recently, the 4L65E and 4L70E versions have been put into production.Based on your description of the malfunction symptoms,i would be inclined to say yours is probably the 4L60E version, because the speedometer malfunction occuring at exactly the same time as the shift malfunction. On a 700/4L60,the speedo malfunction would have no affect on the upshifts, the trans would operate normally. On the 4L60E,a speedo malfunction would likely cause no upshifts. You should still visually verify by the governor cover,or lack thereof,on the side of the trans case.It could just be a speed sensor malfunction if it has the "E" model. If so,it would have set a trouble code which can be accessed with a scan tool or a code reader.Hope this eliminates any confusion.Good luck!!
