The filter should be in the fuel line under the car between the gas tank and the engine.
On some models it is in the engine compartment, and on others it is in front of the gas tank.
You squeeze a clip together on one end and the other end has a threaded pipe nut.
Make sure you release the pressure in the line before you take the line loose.

Sounds like it's you spark plug leads. Depending which engine you have in there, if you have the 2.4L then it is a module.

Check the condition of the O2 sensors in the exhaust system. If the car has a lot of miles, those sensors become worn and don't sense proper fuel mixture.

SOURCE: change a serpentine belt on a 1996 chevy cavalier

Diagram should be under the hood
The auto tensioneris down low and dificult to get to.
If it has not been changed in a while you will need a long thin push stick and a serpentine tool.
Push on the belt hard at the auto adjuster and pop the belt off the smooth pully (located top).
hook up the serpentine belt tool and then mount the new belt
