Question about 1997 Volkswagen Golf

My car is a VW golf Gti mk3 8v 2.0L, Alternator / water pump drive belt has snapped and been lost. I have new belt but I'm unsure of routing around the 3 pulleys. does the alternator act as the tensioner??

    I have a similar problem on my MK3 8v 1.8L. The belt is frayed and needs to be replaced. The problem is the alternator belt runs inside the water pump belt so I think you need to remove that before you can fit the new belt! The alternator pushes down on a spring that tensions it. It's an absolute pig to get the altrenator belt back over the pulley! In fact I can't get the belt back on the pully with the spring removed! Garage job me-thinks!

Loosen the alternator and push the alternator to-wards the engine,put your new belt on ,fitting around the 3 pulleys once fitted look and see that the belt is in line.If your happy the belt is lined put a small bar between the engine and alternator and force the alternator out towards the front this should tension your belt tighten bolts on alternator.;at the longest point between two pullys in the middle of the belt move belt up and down with fingers if tension is right it should not move more than about 150ml,hope this helps you.adrian

Aircon belt snapped, can i still drive my citi golf


It won't hurt the AC compressor. As long as the belt doesn't also drive the water pump or alternator, you should be fine without the AC belt.

I have a vw golf gti the engine is over heating and the heaters are only blowing cold the temperature gage goes to the red i have took the thermostat out and replaced it with a new one but the problem is...


Have you replaced the original water pump that has a plastic impeller? This can crack where it is connected to the shaft for the pulley. When it does it will spin slower or not spin at all at higher engine speeds although it might seem fine during idle. When you do this repair I suggest to do the timing belt service too. Water pump repair calls for timing belt removal to access the water pump bolts. It's best to consider timing belt repair work so you won't have to do it later on.

Your local Napa store can print you out a belt routing diagram, but check under your hood, you may have a routing sticker.

Drive belt assembly


The mark II VW uses one large belt which goes around the crank, water pump and A/C compressor. Then, there is another smaller belt that goes around the crank and power steering pump (if equipped). Then, a smaller belt goes around the A/C compressor and around the alternator. If it's a diesel, there will also be a tensioner pulley for the alternator belt. If gasoline, there will be no pulley. To answer your question, there are 3 belts. One big one and two small ones.

you should find a diagrame under the hud if not you can go to you local auto like advanced or autozone and they can find the diagrame for you and even print it out for you hope this helps
