1992 318i Engine surge up and down low to high idle

In this case when it happened, he had to boost the car because he said the battery is dead from sitting and no good.

It started and seemed fine but when i hit the Headlights the car wanted to stall so I shut the headlights off and it would rev up and Down over and over again like a surge... and smelt really really rich. I was told it did not affect the car when he drove at the end of summer and would stop after he stopped at a light and took off again .. I assume with High revs... it was just strange that it started when i put the lights on... maybe needs a battery or Alt? He was told it just need and O2 sensor.

I was also told in the hottest summer day she would run hot.. last bar before the red but never past that.

Welcome to the world of BMW's. return the car to the seller. you got a bad one. You got an electrical short draining the battery. Bring a blank check and sign it over to the dealer. They're going to have to run through the entire electrical system to find the short. That work alone is worth more than the a used up 2001 325i.

There isn't a car out there that likes to be put in drive as soon as it is started. Mine especialy. I give it at least 30 seconds to warm while I am adjusting evrything and away I go. Runs like a champ. Let it warm up for a couple of minutes from a cold start.

Truck starts with a boost but once cables are off battery indicator drops then truck shuts down unless engine is revved.

Check the alternator and the charging system. You may have a weak or failing alternator. If you have a voltmeter, get the battery reading with the engine off. A charged, good battery should show at least 12.6 volts. If you have to boost it, it must be low on charge. Recharge it or have it tested, a dead cell in the battery would not let it charge up.
Now take a reading on the battery with the engine idling, or idling as low as possible without dying. A good alternator and charging system will make the battery now read at least 13.5 volts. If your reading is lower than this, you probably have a weak alternator.

the 'surge' probably did damage to the idle air controller, a device that is commanded by the engine computer to control the engine idle. You are lucky that is all it damaged, it could have been very expensive, as it is, that part is probably less than $100 and fairly easy to replace.

Often a sign of a thermostat that's duff. Usually will also show on bad economy.

Sometimes can also happen if your battery is nearly dead, as it can put load on the engine.

Engine surges 100rpm?

Here is the common cause of surges, stalls at stops, slow idle speed, erratic idle speed, rough idle and engine hesitation (and other problems), it is in most cases the idle speed control air-bypass valve and or throttle valve and upper intake, these area's get full of gunk and combustion residue over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.
