1996 jeep cheroke starter / Ignition? won' turn over

Good Morning, I used my 1996 jeep grand cheroke to go to the store. One hour later it just didn't want to start. I will not turn over. Battery is fine. Power to everything is fine.Outdoor temperature is not cold. It just acts like it is flat dead. My husband had a look at it the next day and discovered the whole assembly where you put the key into the ignition is "wobbly". Just wondering if you have any suggestions , I need to have it towed to the dealership for repair and I would like to have a small idea of the problem.

That could be the problem, but as long as its going to the dealer to fix that have them put an ignition switch in too. there has been alot of people having the same problem such as yours, and i know alot of times that switch is the problem.

Cars are like that. I think they like driving people crazy. I\'ve been driven crazy by my Sentra for three months now.
Has the fuel pressure been checked? I wonder if your fuel pressure regulator has failed (the diaphragm inside will rupture and suck extra gas in through the vacuum hose attached to the regulator-could be the cause of backfiring). Something to check, anyway.

I had just replaced my starter a couple days ago on my 96 grand jeep cheroke v8, but even before i did i started getting this check battery on the little screen and the check guages light would come on. ...

If the battery voltage gauge goes to zero, it may be a bad connection at the battery.
Batteries generally last an average of only 3 years, but they will go bad gradually until the voltage drop on starting will drop below levels that the car can run the starter.

Try a new battery, they're not too expensive at Walmart or Sears or a local auto parts store.
Try the largest CCA capacity battery you can buy and you won't have regrets, in my experience.

Good luck on this repair.

Try gently tapping the starter motor with a hammer or bar. There may be a bad contact in the sollenoid or the starter motor brushes worn to their limit. Tapping may give you a tempory fix if the problem lies in the starter motor.

contrary to what people think, the ignition key cylinder is not the ignition switch (switch itself is on top of steering column, connected to key tumbler by a metal rod.) If the switch has failed, it may feel strange when you turn the key. Any competent repair shop will do testing to both the switch, and the components it operates to find the problem. Obviously, the price will cover time testing , r&r of parts and the price of the parts themselves. Beware of shops that want to change everything, including the seats in order to make the repair. If you have a question about how valid the diagnosis is, ask it here!

Did you try turning steering wheel hard one way or the other? If your parked with wheels cranked, get someone to try rocking vehicle back & forth a bit while you try to turn wheel in same direction they are cranked real hard, then try to cycle key.

Check the starter, selinoid, and then the ignition switch if the motor will not turn over. If it turns over without fire check the ignition coil and then the distributor.
