Question about 1997 Chevrolet K1500
Truck was down and sat about 5 weeks because it would not start. Found the ignition coil was bad. Replaced with one from Autozone. Fixed problem of not starting at all, but started having problems with my tachometer bouncing all around during normal driving, yet seemed to register correctly at idle. Then it started to drop to zero and the truck would **** when it came back up. Realized the truck was momentarily quitting. On my way to work one day, the truck shut off when I slowed to start my turn into the driveway. After coasting to a stop, I put the truck in park and was able to restart it immediately. Drove 300 yds to the parking lot and parked. While sitting there in my space the truck quit 3 more times while idling, but did start back immediately. What is causing it to quit? Added note. The plug that plugs into the coil has one pin that has appeared to have gotten hot because the plastic around it is charred and melted somewhat.
Recheck that you have the spark plug wires in the correct order and you might have to fashion some kind of seal on that wire... perhaps silicone caulking to keep it from arcing... clean the connection first.

The engine in this vehicles drive train are fully electronically controlled by a computer called the PCM (Power Train Control Module). Whenever a problem like this occurs the computer stores a record of the problem (there are of course some exceptions to this, like the fuel pump, engine coolant temperature sensor and MAF sensor for instance) in the form of a fault code in its memory, to read these fault codes you must have the systems memory scanned with a special tool. Once the fault code(s) are read you then must perform the appropriate diagnostic testing to find and resolve the problem(s) DO NOT REPLACE ANY PARTS UNTIL A TRAINED TECHNICAIN HAS DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM TO AVOID SPENDING YOUR HARD EARNED MONEY ON PARTS THAT MAY NOT CORRECT THE PROBLEM
