1989 ciera orange wire going to the oil pressure switch was accidently grounded. Will turn over backfire but not start . Fuel pump won't power up. No power to fuel pump relay. Took relay apart manually...


You didn't post an engine size but you are correct in thinking there is a fusible link that blew when you grounded the orange wire but there is also an inline fuse that protects the oil pressure switch and the fuel pump relay. It is usually located on the firewall.

You can check the fusible links near the starter for continuity. If one of them is burnt up start there by replacing it. If none of them are bad you will need to find the inline fuse. At least the 3.3 liter engine is set up this way.

AM temp 55 car started but stalled out after starting. Attempted to restart and did not hear fuel pump. Tried again and then fuel pump kicked in. Checking fuel pump inertial switch and fuel pump electrical supply.

Fuel pumps will not run!


Hey lets try this ! Locate your starter solenoid & look for a yellow wire marked with a "W" . That may be the fusible link for fuel pump. Let me know what you find.

Check under the hood for a box containing your fusible links (they look like large blade fuses in most modern vehicles). The fuel pump relay only operates the fuel pump. It doesn't provide power to the rest of the fuel system. Odds are the fuse for the injection system is blown. The inside of the cover of most fusible link cases usually has a diagram which tells what each fuse is. The easiest thing to do is locate that fuse and remove it (with the vehicle off of course) and visually inspect to see if it's blown. If it is, simply replace it and see if that corrects your problem. While you're under the hood you might want to trace the wires back to their origin and check to be sure the harness is not rubbing or chafing against anything that might have caused wires to break and short. It's rare for those fusible links to blow without a reason.

You said you have no fuel pressure, so I assume the truck is fuel injected. I'm not sure why you thought changing the ignition module would restore the fuel pressure.
If you look in the engine compartment and find the diagnostic test connector you will find another connector close to it that should be marked "fuel pump or F.P.".It will be back by the firewall usually in the same area as various relays including the fuel pump relay
are located.
Connect a wire from that connector to ground and turn the ignition switch to run. If the pump is working you will hear the relay click and the pump running.
If you don't keep touching the wire to ground so you can at least locate the relay, then check to see if the fusible link for the fuel pump is burnt out.
If you find that the fusible link is ok but you don't hear the relay click then the relay is probably shot.
If your truck has recently been in an accident or someone bumped into it hard, the first thing to do is check to see if the inertia switch needs to be reset.

Fuel pump bad?


Carburated engines is on the drivers side of the engine in the front Fuel injected are in the Tank and some high pressue system had an additional "pusher pump" on the frame rail
