98 ford explorer/at/v6

My vehicle will not upshift thru the gears, i have to do this maually. when coming to a stop 40mph. if i dont manually downshift this is where the fun begins. the vehicle will shake really bad and stall out. sometimes when i restart it and put it in gear it will stall out. ammco said for $200 they will tear down the transmission. no codes came up. someone else told me it was the torque converter. and so on this is what i been told, torque converter, speed/wheel sensors, neutral safety switch. the transmission itself. i live from payday to payday and support 4 people. this is my only means of transportation. it is fine other then this problem. can anyone please help me!!

Change the transfer filter, and you might need to change the modulator control valve that makes it shift.

Stops running

What kind of car is it? Is it manual or automatic transmission? Also, I would suggest checking your idle air control valve. That allows the cars idle to rise when you come to a complete stop. If it sticks then the vehicle will idle too low and stall. Or it could be that your idle adjustment is too low, that is a screw located on the throttle manifoldddepending on your vehicle type. I hope this at least put a you in a better direction.

You have to put it in neutral with the engine running and vehicle stopped to disengage and engage the 4wd.

best advice is dont go 40mph in 5th gear... if you are going up a hill at 40mph in 5th gear i have no doubt that it is jerking, your putting too much stress on the engine. shift up to 4th or 3rd you will be fine. 5th gear is an overdrive gear. 55+mph

Gears spinning. can only do about 40mph. tranny fluid black. no hazards or blinkers. fuses good.

If the engine is reving, try downshifting to 2nd gear and see what happens. In fact, start in low and upshift to 2nd and see if it revs in both of those positions. It sounds like you are losing hydraulic pressure and the clutch packs are slipping. That requires a rebuilt or used trans.

How do you replace the speedometer drive gear on a 1996 ford explorer xlt 4x4 v6

If you mean the gear in the speedo head .You have to disassemble the cluster. Google odometer gears and order a new one. It's a lot cheaper than a cluster.

did you change any tires? if the circumference of the tires are more than 1 inch difference from each this will cause the 4wd to try to engage because it sees a difference in wheel speed

98 Explorer timing chain?

If this is a SOHC 4.0 V6 then there is a recall on the tensioners for the timing chain, they cause the kind of noise you speak of, check with ford, this is the SOHC only.
