I have a 92 passat 2.0 doch 16v. it wont start. do i need 2 fuel pumps?..the car has been sitting for 3 years. i had once last year changed the pump in the tank, it turned on but car would not start. i put new spark plugs. when i turn the key the engine wants to turn over but it just wont..any ideas?,,
The Thing to do here in order.. Drain the gas, from the tank put in fresh also 1/2 can of Seafoam... Change the fuel filter. Make sure BOTH Fuel Pumps are working (1-in tank, 1-Under Passenger side Just behind the rear tire) Undo the high pressure line to the Fuel Distibutor.. (put a soup can or something like that) under the line, get some help have 1 person turn the key to run,(cycles the fuel pump relay) then reset and turn to run a 3-4 times... That will push out the old gas in the line, reason for the second person you dont want to "jump" the fuel pump relay. with no one watching under hood.. Tighten up the fuel line again It should go after that..
I bet it's the gas. After some time the gas will no longer be volatile enough to start the car. Try draining all the fuel and putting in some fresh gas. Remember, when you try to start it again you'll need to get the new gas through the pump and lines before it will start. Also, check the condition of the injectors. Old gas can start to break down and build up a film that could be on your injectors (or clog your fuel filter- better check that too). Hope this helps.

Start with the simple and replace the fuel filter, it's also a good thing to clean the throttle body with throttle body cleaner. Auto Zone will have the fuel filter and can give you the step by step instructions for you to replace the fuel filter with common tools. You can also ask for the step by step instructions for replacing the fuel pump if you think it's the pump has gone bad too. Good luck

Possible flooding, cold weather can freez open injectors causing them to leak into the cylinders. Press the gass pedal all the way to the floor and crank the engine for no more than 60 seconds. The cylinders will clear themselves allowing proper mix of air/fuel and should start easy. If that does not solve please specify if the engine is 1.8l or 2.8l.

Several things to attack here... use a gauge to check fuel pressure at the injector manifold... should be 80 psi i believe... also check the fuel pump relay it may not be working right in the "start" position... (yes it's actually two relays in one... one for "start" and one for "run"... test this by attaching a light or meter at the pump terminals (under the car, right rear) if it doesn't light right up (or show battery voltage) when key is turned the problem is definitely electrical... if pressure is low, first replace the filters, if still low then suspect the pump(s). oh did I mention there are two pumps? One is called the transfer pump (in the tank) the other is the high pressure pump. Rule out the high pressure pump before suspecting the transfer pump.
Hope this helps...;-)

locate a black plastic cap. tak it off. then you can see the pump. twist it against the clock.(the upper part) dont be afraid using some force. usally sits hard.when twist--> drag up. sorry bad english:)
Testimonial: "Just the info I needed!!! It went very smooth when I knew I had to twist the tank CCW!!!"
