It is a 3.2 litre in line

  • chansolltd Feb 03, 2009

Thanks for your help,I cleaned the distributor carbon brush and HT connections inside, it's in good condition. Had the plugs out they were fine except 2 of them were surrounded by oil which had run down when someone had topped up. It started but for about 60 seconds was not firing on all cylinders but then it picked up and ticked over very nicely, no clouds of smoke from the exhaust. It has done this once before, same problem.
I'm a bit worried because I dont know what causes it. Any Ideas would be much appreciated.

these engine run forever,so this is difficult as iam thinking about it,i have a 4 litre XJ6 you say you have a spark hopefully its a nice big fat juicy blue one,and you say you have fuel but have you checked thats it reaching the injectors?? because it sounds like it could be a fuel pump.these engines have a timing chain and they can rattle but never seen one break AS YET.Also the distributor cap and rotor arm could have a problem,if you have only pulled the centre lead out to check for a spark it will show one but if rotor arm or carbon brush in middle of cap worn out ??then spark not reaching plugs.Check the vacumn pipe that runs to the end of the injector feed pipe where their is a valve .PS and dont forget to cream up the seats with leather restore and polish the wood, and no smoking allowed in it either.ITS a JAGUAR

Try putting some injector cleaner with the fuel one tin per tank of petrol ,then repeat this every couple of months.and see how it goes .My honest opinion ??for whats its worth ---your not polishing it enough and its going on strike.

My xj8 Jaguar crank up and sets right back off what all could be wrong

Security is set. Could be one problem. Fuel system can do this, but rarely. Takes a scanner to see where to look first.

My 2000 dodge wont start battery is good checked fuses plugs fuel pump is getting gas it will run for a few days then stop

might want to check the starter. the parts stores can test it once its removed. does it turn over or it wont run? people confuse this. if it wont start that is a starting problem. if it wont run that is a fuel or spark problem. to total different thing. if it turns over the starter is good. not running after it turns it can be a number of things. crank sensor or cam sensor. bad ground or many other things. need more information what it is doing?

Citroen Despatch turns over but won't start, not battery problem

Fuel delivery, probably.

Try the following - remove the airbox and spray some starter fluid into the throttle body while someone else cranks the engine. If it tries to start up/run for a few seconds, then you know it's a fuel problem. If it doesn't change anything, then it's most likely a spark issue.

Check the plugs/wires/etc for fouling.

2001 jaguar s-type won't crank battery new and charged. Turn the ignition car won't make a sound

many things will cause no start problems could have faulty ignition switch.use test light see if power going to starter if not check ignition fuse to starter.if power going to starter, more likely starter solenoid or starter faulty.if ignition fuse okay and starter and solenoid okay still no start problem could be in the ignition switch or inhibitor switch faulty.code scan for faulty theft security system which will also cause no start conditions.

2002 Chevy Blazer with starting problem. It will start sometimes but mostly not. Runs great when it does start. Starter cranks fine. Has new fuel filter and gas lines.

You need 3 things for your vehicle to start and run.. Fuel, spark and air. If you've recently replaced the fuel filter I'd have the fuel pumps electrical connections checked out. It could possibly be on its way out. Also check all spark plugs, wires and coil pack to make sure nothing is damaged on the "spark system". Then of course make sure the filter is clean and that all of your sensors monitoring the air flow into the throttle body are connected. From personal experience though, I'd say it sound like the fuel pump isn't always doing what it should upon initial start up and that's where I'd direct my attention.

My car sat idle for about a month but I had a friend start it occasionally to keep the battery up and running. One day the engine would not turn over when he tried to start it up. The lights come on like...

yeah, try starter fluid just to verify if it;s fuel or spark related. If it starts or tries to, then it's a fuel problem. You should be able to hear your pump turn on, when you turn key on, may need to stand by tank, when someone turns key on. it should activate for about 2 seconds, with key on.(that's to pressurize your system with gas) then when cranking, the pump should run(may not hear it then-so just listen when key is initially turned on. No noise: your pump may not be working. If you can hear the pump, it may be another issue.

I was driving and the car cut off. It won't start but it cranks and won't turn over.It is a 1995 Olds Cutlass Ciera SL, 6 Cylinder.

your terminology is wrong.if it cranks its turning over what you mean is it won`t start(fire up) as you said at the beginning.anyways it sounds like you could have a fuel pump problem that stop working.this happens should check for spark at the plugs to make sure its not an ignition problem.did you notice a check engine light on when it was running.if so there will be a code in the ecm and may be the cause of your problem.

Is the fuel pump inside the fuel tank? If, so, you could try disconnecting the wire harness at the tank, and hot-wiring the fuel pump directly to a 12 volt source, in the correct polarity of course! If the pump runs, your problem may be a fuel pump relay, or a wire problem or connector problem. If the pump does NOT run, post that info. There may be a way around the problem!

Fuel pump is bad or plugged fuel filter it seems. Crack the line from the filter leading towards the engine first. If gas starts squirting out fast, you have good pressue. If not the filter is plugged or a bad pump. How old is the fuel filter by chance? If original its plugged up by now

89 Jaguar XJ6 engine not turning over

it could be an ignition switch, when it happens try wiggling the key while holding it in start position. also is there a clicking, or a clunk sound when problem arises, if there is then the starter solenoid is bad (most starters have the solenoid mounted right on it) so replace starter if you here a click/clunk noise w/starting
