Question about 1986 Chevrolet Cavalier 2 Door

Auto electric fault on a citroen xsara picasso. Battery drain.

Battery draining completely. Yesterday it drained in TWO HOURS. It's a new battery and we had the battery and alternator checked by a mechanic and they are fine. We are having to disconnect the battery when we are not using the car so that it keeps its charge and we can start the car again. If we don't, we have to get someone to jump start it.***the car make is not on your list and I had to choose a model***

The battery will be fine, the alternator might be draining even if it is charging OK, usually it is the alternator (if you can disconnect all the wires to it and see if it still drains.Otherwise it is a big drain, so what is doing it will be getting warm. It might be unwise to use an ammeter to check as the draw would need to be over the usual 20 amp max for most meters, get back to me with what you find.

I have exactly the same problem as that described above. The garage couldn't find anything wrong but I'm thinking of getting a new alternator. Can anyone confirm whether this definitely resolves the problem?

    Cheers

Hi David,Take the vehicle for a scan and determine what the fault is so that you can have it attended to soonest. The light means you cannot depend on its operation! Regards John

Something is draining the power I recommend you take it to a mechanic or a friend to be checked, hard to say what may be the problem without looking around.

Electrical battery drain OR "parasitic drain"

Seen this "mystery drain" many times. Check spark at the battery to see how big the drain is. For this simple test, blow away any (explosive) battery charging fumes. Leave one terminal on and gently touch the other to its post in fairly dark surroundings. Then try it again with the wires taken off the alternator. Your spark is now probably much less. Usually bad diodes leaking electricity backwards through the alternator cause this drain. Replace the alternator or the diode pack inside it. Some mechanics recommend actually measuring the drain.... hahaha. OK whatever.

excessive power loss due to alternator bad..take to parts store so they can check it..diode trio is bad letting power back thru the alternator..basically it wont shut off now and will kill the battery after several hours..

New battery drains.

I can't imagine how changing the belt would have any effect on the electrical system if the alternator is working.
The way you check for a drain is to disconnect the battery ground cable and use a test light to make the connection between the battery and ground. If there is something drawing power from the battery the light will glow.
Then you pull each fuse from the fuse boxes until the light goes out. You also disconnect the starter and alternator if necessary.

Have to charge battery after it has sat for 6 plus hours. We have new alternater and battery. They work good. Any idea as to what could be draining battery? Checked all fuses.

its obvious there is a drain somewhere was this problem present before the battery and alternator change,if so suspect one of the new parts .but if not then start by removing the negative terminal and place a test light across the connection the test light might light up due to small power uses like clock in vehicle. but if its very bright then start pulling fuses until it goes out or dims down find what that fuse goes to and you have you culprit.
